Maya Haywerthen was seventeen years old when a mysterious, unexplainable fire burned down her home and left her orphaned and without family. Her mother's closest friend and Maya's tutor Jeanine took her to the seclusion and safety of Dark Hall, a castle-like place where safety seems unattainable. Maya soon learns that Jeanine and a few other selected adults make up the Migeick, a council that seems as secretive as it is unstable. They run Dark Hall and assure that no one who is not wanted in can get in...or out. Five more girls reside there with Maya, and all of them seem to have dark secrets that they will do anything to keep. As time passes on, Maya finds that Dark Hall is not the safe haven she was told it would be. Harassed everyday by Jeanine, or as the Migieck refer to her as, Sia, with interrogations about the secrets that Maya has fought to protect, she is more vulnerable than sheltered. The Migeick are hiding something, something that can only be as evil and gnarled and twisted as their black hearts... ****** "Maybe this place is like a game board," Marzapan murmured absentmindedly, "it's always is changing. Maybe we're just the pieces." ****** The game for survival just began.
