Wendell Affield By WendellAffield Updated Jul 30

After Wendell Affield's mother, Barbara, died in 2010, he discovered a time capsule locked in the chickenhouse on his family's farm homestead in northern Minnesota. He and his sister rescued the treasure from siblings who wanted to burn the family secrets. Affield spent eight years studying, transcribing, and archiving hundreds of documents, thousands of letters and diary pages, dating back to 1822, and many long-lost photos. This story, based on his grandmother's 1937-'38 diaries document her daughter' Barbara's early struggle with mental illness and provides the reader with an intimate glimpse of Europe as it moves toward World War Two.
