The Perilous Secret

Chapter 1

         It wasn't uncommon for Caroline Shae to be driving around alone.  She just needed time to think- time to recuperate and become whole again.  Her children had paid no mind when she left the house half an hour ago.  Caroline had said her goodbyes by reminding them to not raid the refrigerator while she was gone.  They were old enough to be left alone.  And used to it.

         Caroline flipped a knob on the dashboard and the windshield wipers moved faster across the front window.  Outside, the storm intensified and the winds picked up.  Rain pelted against the exterior of her car.   Seeing past to the next block was near to impossible.  Also, as the car rumbled through a rural area of town, Caroline took notice at the lack of life.  Nobody's lights were on and no other cars could be seen.
