Beneath the Surface (Revised Edition)
Mermaid » a fabled marine creature with the head and upper body of a woman and the tail of a fish
Sea Nymph » a mythological spirit of nature imagined as a beautiful maiden inhabiting seas and oceans
Siren » dangerous yet beautiful sea creatures who lured men to their doom
The truth is far different...and much worse.
Velocity increasing with each second, the ocean inhabitant surged through the water, breaching the surface in a volcanic eruption of spray and foam. The small sailing vessel rocked unsteadily against the unexpected onslaught then under the weight of the brutal attack careened over, bow thrust beneath the surface. Instead of sinking, the well-made wooden craft bobbed in the water, harmless and silent, but the man clinging to the railing was not so fortunate.
Ripped from the ship by a powerful rush of water, engulfed by the cold ocean, he tried to hold his breath, to see what had so viciously attacked unprovoked. It coiled like a snake around him, squeezing, razor sharp scales cutting easily through his skin. Grabbed by the shoulders, jerked forward, he found himself face to face with a nightmarish vision. Gaping jaws, sunken, gaunt features, black, expressionless eyes, he screamed in horror, drowned long before his body was rent limb from limb and dragged to the bottom of the sea.
