Dreampunk is a niche sci-fi/fantasy genre that asks the question "Is this real?" and then follows up with "What does that even mean anyway?"

Alice in Wonderland would be the prototypical example, but any anti-authoritarian investigation into the nature of dreams, reality, the self, and the universe might qualify. Good examples can be found in the works of Philip K. Dick, Neil Gaiman, and Haruki Murakami. The aesthetic is somewhere in the neighborhood of Scott Pilgrim, Over the Garden Wall, Maniac, and the weirdest parts of Twin Peaks.
