Dreampunk is a sci-fi/fantasy subgenre that asks the question "Is this real?" and then follows up with "What does that even mean anyway?"

Alice in Wonderland would be the prototypical example, but any anti-authoritarian investigation into the nature of dreams, reality, the self, and the universe might qualify. Good examples include the works of Philip K. Dick, Haruki Murakami, and Neil Gaiman. The aesthetic is somewhere in the neighborhood of Twin Peaks, Scott Pilgrim, and Over the Garden Wall.

Join the conversation to help decide what "dreampunk" will become. It is, after all, up to us.

Yelena Calavera is a dreampunk author who maintains a blog called "Dreaming in the City". Here is her take on "the dreampunk philosophy": http://yelenacalavera.blogspot.com/2013/11/dreams-chaos-counterculture-dreampunk.html

Here is a website devoted to "dreampunk", which it defines in a really broad sense, but then also more specifically as "a literary subgenre descended from steampunk and cyberpunk that differs from them in its inclusion of elements of dream logic." http://dreampunk.me/blog/what-is-dreampunk/

This sounds great! And it feels right up my writing-alley. Some passages in The Night Circus remind me of what's described here, though the character subjectivity aspect might be lacking for most of it

Great to hear about this. It's a really interesting genre to explore for sure.
It might not count as a dream experience, but there's a Netflix film called The Discovery that you might like, about a scientist who discovers proof of an afterlife, that this made me think of too.
Love it that you wrote this. It's over my head, but awesome Cliff!

This makes a lot of sense. Very tempted to give dreampunk a go at some point now!
