❝ I come to the Ruins every day to see everything again. To remember every smell and sound from that day, to embed the memories into my mind so that I may never forget my terrible sins. I come to revel in the absolute destruction I have caused and cry until the earth beneath me is damp with my salty tears and bitter wishes. I do not come to ask for forgiveness because what I have done is unforgivable. I do not come to apologise because I am proof of the apology. ❞
The year is 2050, and a new form of terrorism has risen; cloners, they call them. Artificially intelligent robots that have the ability to change their face and body type on command. Bombs implanted inside them, they roam the streets unnoticed, hiding in plain sight until their detonation. After the largest synchronized attack in history takes down all the major cities in the United States, war tears apart what little remains of the country.
After one of the biggest of these explosions obliterates Phoenix and half of her small town, Tara Montgomery is left to fend for herself, living off of the salvageable pickings from gas stations and stores long abandoned. But now, five years later, gangs are starting to form and war is breaking out again. With no way to escape, what is to become of her? And what about the strange mutated creatures that roam the street, devouring any living thing that is unfortunate enough to get in their way?
And then, in a twist of fate, she meets him.
