Asha! | Dave East
Wanting better for herself and her future, A'shadieeyah (Asha)'s mother, Amala got out of the country that she was raised in, Iraq. She found a way to get to the states so she could start over.
In Iraq, she didn't get an education. She couldn't read, write, or count! So getting a job was pretty hard. All she could do was cook, and clean. So that was what she did. She became a domestic worker. She worked until she could afford a green card. Then she worked some more until she could afford an apartment.
With the help of a man she met, she was able to get an apartment a lot sooner. His name was Rashad. He helped her learn to count her own money, helped her learn how to read, and write. He turned her life around!
The two fell in love, and married. They then started a family. Their first born was
A'shadieeyah Alula Nassar. She was beautiful! They couldn't wait to have more.
But that was when the worst happened. A year later, Rashad was killed in the terrorist attack, of 9/11.
Years later, A'shadieeyah was enrolled in an Muslim school. She began to help her mother how to read and write more.
But life wasn't very good for A'shadieeyah. While growing up in East Harlem, she noticed she was different from the others. They used to call her nasty things, and they made fun of her name. Knowing it was hard to pronounce, she gave herself the nick name Asha.
Asha never had a real friend. But what will happen when she finds someone who is in need of a friend? Read more to find out.
