Pete's Bouquet (sequel to Loving Marguerite)
This is the continuing saga of Pete and Daisy. They still live in NYC, and are now parents to two daughters. Pete has a burgeoning career as a musician, but someone from the past shows up, threatening to destroy all that they've built together over the past five years.
Daisy finished washing her face, then went to check on the girls. Francie was clutching her bunny, dreaming whatever it was babies dreamed about before they could articulate their thoughts. Her curly head of blonde hair was spread out all over her pillow; how could a one year old baby have so much hair?
She turned away after pressing a kiss to the forehead of the dreaming little one and crossed to the other bed. Clio, wavy dark hair tamed into a fat braid for sleep, looked up at her with big eyes.
"I'm not sleepy," she declared, her usual bedtime litany.
"Just close your eyes and look for sleep." Daisy gave her usual reply.
Clio grabbed her mother's hand, and Daisy smiled as she sat on the edge of the bed.
"What?" she asked quietly, mindful of the sleeping toddler in the other bed.
"Just wanted to give you extra love," Clio said softly, playing with her mother's hand, which she had yet to release.
"Thank you, love," she responded, bending over to kiss the little mouth.
"Hey, what's going on in here?" came a voice from the doorway. "You should be sleeping, topolina."
"Yeah, you coming in here is going to help with that," Daisy said drily, rising and patting Pete on the tummy as she switched places with him.
"Make a mustache, Daddy," Clio requested, and her father picked up her braid and put it under his nose. He wiggled it up and down, much to her delight, and Pete had to shush her again before letting the mustache drop from his face.
"Now you're going to go to sleep, hm?" he said, trying to be stern and firm. It was laughable. He was at the mercy of his girls, all three of them, anyone who knew them could attest to that.
