German immigrants like Emma are treated warily, even hated. Emma recently had come to America to escape the depression that her home country was in. She has it better than most, thanks to her British mother, Emma can speak fluent English and has a job at the New York Press.
A night in Brooklyn after visiting a friend goes wrong. Her accent gives her away one night to a gang of boys. Boys who hate the German immigrants, and hate Emma. In danger with her back against a wall, Emma is saved by a tall stranger who identifies himself as David.
