We tend to forget the pain of losing someone, in a moment of euphoria and when it eventually starts slipping away, the only thing left is a memory. A memory when repeated in your head every time can only give you sorrow and uncertainty of whether you'll see them again or not.
Character less story, you can very relate it yourself or characters of your own (in your thoughts, of course).
