Booker Larkin has the makings of a child prodigy.

However, with a dead mother and no formal education, he finds himself in an orphanage surrounded by dull and average children.

Except for Benedict Hawk.

Benedict is the only person able to challenge Booker's brilliance. The two form a fast friendship, bonding over their passion for expanding their minds and exploring the macabre. Fascinated by the books they study, their curiosity soon leads them to try their hand at the darker side of science.

The boys embark on a mission to test the boundaries of biology and medicine. Benedict pushes Booker to join him in his questionable experiments, and together, they prove to be an unbeatable team.

Their risky behavior, though, could be what ends their bizarre bond.

Elysium series short story.

this is an intriguing set of characters you have here. Odd, likable.
I loved this line. Up until now, Ms. Kaylock has been professionally warm, if that makes sense. Like she's a store greeter or a hotel host reading a rehearsed speech and here's Booker, just out of the cold from a terrible experience and she's expecting him to perform.

                              It's such a natural response.
