My Round Four entry for the UWSClub Writing Challenge. The prompt was "humanity", and we were supposed to write a story based on something we were deeply in touch with, as well as include three out of eight pictures. I chose to write about how seemingly tiny and insignificant things we do (or others do for us) can have a huge impact. Over the last few years in my own life especially, I have come to realize just how much those very small things can mean. For the judges, the pictures I used in the order that I used them: #6- Tiger swimming in algae, #7- attatched cottages on a small lane next to a stream, #8- faceless plastic dolls in a factory, #5- leaping dancer. - Bird Complete

Every gift comes with a price. What would you give to keep the one that you love safe? I did a bunch of research into the fylgjur before writing this story. What I found was that there were some things that overlapped and others that were pretty fluid over time and dependent upon the source. Some said they appeared as animal representations of a person's character, others as a woman guardian or precursor to one's death, and still others as shape-shifting guardians with ties to the Fates and Dìs and Valkyries. They could be tied to only one person, or a family down through the generations, or a clan. They were also said to be tied to the person/family/clan through an object that would become warm or hot to the touch in the fylgja's presence, whether they were currently visible or not. I have taken a few liberties, and I have combined things from different stories and sources, but I have tried to stay true to the spirit of the legend. My Round Three entry for the UWSClub Writing Challenge coming in at 1,850 words. My group had to write an action story from a male perspective, keeping it between 500-2,000 words, and begin it with one of two quotes. I chose "Guns are for show. Knives are for pros." -Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels *Warning: There are a few brief scenes that may be disturbing to those of a sensitive nature.*
