Patricia och Ola bor på Ljusterö i Stockholms skärgård med sina två barn De har har både välbetalda jobb och familjen är omtyckt i närsamhället. Med andra ord en tillvaro utöver det vanliga. En morgon dagen innan midsommarafton händer något som förändrar hela familjens tillvaro. Dottern som paret adopterade när hon var nio månader gammal ska utvisas, och inte nog med det. Hon ska utvisas ensam till ett land där hon inte har bott sedan hon var tre månader gammal. Efter den morgonen tvingar tillvaron familjen att förändra sitt sätt att leva. När myndigheterna börja kräva allt mer att familjen ska överlämna dottern inför utvisning, så börjar Patricias och Olas kamp för att skydda sin dotter, till varje pris. De kommer att bli tvungna att göra uppoffring efter uppoffring. Något som till slut tvingas dem till et liv borta det hederliga vilket med tiden börjar sätta deras karriärer på spel. Samtidigt vantrivs den unge men den begåvade och talangfulla advokaten Emma Varg med trakasserier på sin arbetsplats. Det hela slutar med att Emma säger upp sig och flyttar ut till föräldrarnas sommarstuga på Ljusterö för att hämta kraft efter den svåra tillvaron. Hon får nys om familjen och deras situation, börjar jobba som konsult och gör fallet till sitt. Men hon har egentligen ingen aning om hur hårt och tuft arbete som väntar henne. Av en tillfällighet stöter hon på en journalist på ön som hört talas om hennes fall- Journalisten Karl Lydén som sedan lång tid är delägare av journalistbyrån ''Inkognito'' som specialiserar sig av granskande journalistik ''Skyddslingen'' är den första boken om advokaten Emma Varg och journalisten Karl Lydén. En bok om ett rättsövergrepp mot en oskyldigt barn, en maktlös familj vars liv riskeras att slås i spillror, och en ung kvinnas jakt på bekräftelse.
