I heard my nickname and suddenly I remembered, all these questions I didn't ask.
~
I never asked if you were leaving soon,
If biting ears still made you swoon.
If our love needed stronger tune,
Or if our socks still fit the mood.
I never asked about the cocoa breath,
Or kitchen kisses flirting with death.
If public teeth were still our wreath,
Or if the love had any breadth.
Now all the questions crowd my chest,
Regrets in rhymes that won't let rest.
The love that slipped while I confessed-
Too late, too slow, too unaddressed.
Forgive this heart that held too loose,
The one that slipped without excuse.
In every stanza, every truce-
I'm sorry for the love I let reduce.
I hope these poems make readers pause,
To ask the questions, hold the cause.
To bite the ear, to kiss because-
Love slips away without applause.
