The order of the last light

For centuries, the Church has protected humanity from the creatures that hide among it. Bishop Liraz has devoted his entire life to that cause. Raised within the Order, Liraz has been taught that supernatural beings are distortions of God's design, creatures that may look human, but can never truly be trusted. As one of the Church's most experienced vampire specialists, he knows better than most how dangerous they are. Then a stranger enters his confessional. The man's confession is strange: an admission of consuming love so completely that it has become indistinguishable from worship. Liraz dismisses it as the ramblings of a troubled man-until he begins seeing the stranger in his dreams. And then he sees him again. Something about him feels impossibly familiar, despite Liraz's certainty that they have never met. The dreams become more vivid. Memories surface that Liraz cannot explain. And the more he tries to uncover the truth, the more he realizes that someone has gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure he never remembers. At the same time, the Order is changing. Deacons are being trained more aggressively. Priests are being watched for signs of corruption. Bishops are ordered to increase their surveillance, and reports that once remained within local jurisdictions are now being funneled upward through the Church's increasingly secretive hierarchy. And beneath the Church's public mission of protecting humanity lies something far more disturbing. Caught between his vows, a carefully constructed life, and a love he cannot remember choosing, Liraz begins to uncover a conspiracy reaching far beyond the vampires he was trained to destroy.
