HALEY
"Mommy" I shouted, running forward to the lake. I looked back at her smiling face as she caught up to me, taking me in her arms. I laughed as she hugged me tight.
"I love you Mommy" I said.
"I love you too Violets." She told me, her smile mirroring mine.
Suddenly everything changed.
We were no longer by the lake where we went on picnics and played through the evening light. The sterile atmosphere of the hospital seemed overpowering to my six-year-old self. Even though I couldn't understand what was going on, I sensed that something was wrong. Dad held my hand as he led me to a room. I gasped as I found my mom on the bed hooked up to a lot of beeping machines I didn't know the use for. I looked up at my dad, confused and scared. Why was mom like this? She looked pale and she was breathing like every intake of air hurt her. Her eyes were closed. She was sleeping.
"Mommy?" I asked softly, afraid that she would not wake up. It was a relief when she opened her eyes and smiled at me through the weird mask over her nose and mouth.
"Hi sweetie" she said. Her voice sounded hoarse.
"What's wrong Mommy? What happened to you?" I asked.
"Mommy's sick dear" said Dad. "But don't worry" he continued, seeing my terrified face. "She'll get well soon." Dad soothed as Mom told me about how much she loves me.
She never did get well. That was the last time I spoke to my mother....
" Haley? Haley, wake up! Are you okay?"
I jerked awake to see Dad watching me with a worried expression. I looked around for a while, confused as to where I was. Then it hit me. I was on a plane to Phoenix. I sighed inwardly as I told my dad " I'm fine."
"I don't think so. You were crying in your sleep."
Great.
Seriously Dad. I'm fine. Just had a dream."
Dad seemed to realise that there was more to it than that but thankfully he didn't press.
I never really got to round to introducing myself, I guess. I'm Haley Harker. I'm seventeen. I used to live in California. Emphasis on used to. My dad got a better job as infrastructure engineer in Phoenix and boom! Here we are on a plane to Phoenix. Don't even ask me how he found a school for me so soon. I mean, semester starts two days after we get there. So anyways, fastforwarding, here I am, in a plane to Phoenix.
I sighed. Well at least it won't be any different. I never had anyone notice me in Cali and it isn't gonna change here. I'm pretty much invisible to people.
If only I knew how wrong I was.
