In a peaceful future where gates are no longer a major threat, Sung Jin-Woo and Cha Hae-In have settled into a normal life, raising their son, Sung Su-ho. Jin-Woo, no longer a hunter, now works as a detective, using his sharp instincts and past experience to solve cases. Meanwhile, Hae-In enjoys the quiet life of a housewife, taking care of their home and their energetic four-year-old son.
---
The morning sun peeked through the curtains, casting a golden glow over the cozy apartment. The smell of breakfast filled the air as Cha Hae-In set the table. Su-ho sat in his high chair, kicking his feet excitedly while waiting for his meal.
"Eat slowly this time, Su-ho," Hae-In gently reminded, placing a plate of eggs and rice in front of him.
"Okay, Mommy!" Su-ho chirped, grabbing his spoon with determination.
Jin-Woo entered the kitchen, adjusting his tie. "Smells great," he said, leaning down to kiss Hae-In on the cheek before ruffling Su-ho's hair. "You being a good boy for Mommy?"
Su-ho nodded vigorously, his mouth full of rice.
Hae-In sighed, giving Jin-Woo a playful look. "He's been trying to shadow jump again when I'm not looking."
Jin-Woo chuckled. "Already? He really is my son."
"Not funny," Hae-In scolded, though there was warmth in her voice. "You were at least a teenager when you started pulling stunts like that. He's just four!"
Jin-Woo crouched beside his son. "Hey, Su-ho, listen to Mommy, okay? No shadow jumping inside the house."
"But it's fun!" Su-ho pouted.
Jin-Woo smirked. "I know, but trust me, you don't wanna scare Mommy. She might make you eat more vegetables."
Su-ho gasped dramatically. "Noooo! Not vegetables!"
Hae-In shook her head with a small laugh. "Honestly, you two..."
The family enjoyed their meal together, the peaceful life they had fought for finally becoming a reality.
---
After finishing breakfast, Jin-Woo grabbed his coat and adjusted his tie, preparing to head out for work. As he stepped toward the door, Cha Hae-In followed, carrying little Su-ho in her arms. The boy was still half-drowsy, snuggling into his mother's embrace after eating his fill.
"You're leaving already?" Hae-In asked softly, her golden eyes studying her husband with warmth.
Jin-Woo smirked. "Crime doesn't solve itself."
Hae-In sighed but smiled as she leaned in, pressing a gentle goodbye kiss to his lips. "Be careful, okay?"
Jin-Woo nodded, reaching out to ruffle Su-ho's soft hair. "Take care of Mommy for me, alright, buddy?"
Su-ho yawned, his tiny hand gripping Jin-Woo's fingers. "Okay, Papa... come back fast."
Just as Jin-Woo turned toward the door, a deep yet insect-like voice echoed from the shadows.
[My King, you are almost late,] came Beru's respectful yet urgent warning.
Jin-Woo chuckled, glancing at the loyal Shadow Ant standing in the corner of the room. "I know, I know."
Hae-In gave him a knowing look. "You could just use Shadow Exchange and be there instantly."
Jin-Woo shrugged. "Yeah, but... I figured I'd drive today. You know, experience being human for once."
Hae-In rolled her eyes but smiled. "Alright, Detective Sung, enjoy your normal commute."
With a final wave, Jin-Woo stepped out, heading to his car-choosing, just for today, to live as an ordinary man rather than the Shadow Monarch.
Little did he know, today was about to be anything but ordinary.
Later that afternoon, while Hae-In was busy folding laundry, Su-ho played in his room. His tiny hands play with his toys while the shadows observe and being playful for the young prince. The young prince reached out toward the shadows, fascinated by how they responded to his will.
That's when he saw it.
A black gate, unlike any he had ever seen, shimmered before him. Its dark, swirling mass pulsed with an eerie energy.
The shadows trying to stop him but-
Su-ho blinked. "Huh? What's that?"
Curious, he stepped closer.
And then- it was too late...
Darkness.
---
When Su-ho opened his eyes, he was somewhere else. The sky was gone, replaced by rocky cavern walls. The air smelled different-thick with mana.
"Mama?" he called, his voice echoing in the vast emptiness.
A monstrous growl rumbled nearby, making him freeze. Strange creatures lurked in the shadows, their glowing eyes locking onto him.
Su-ho clenched his fists, his small body trembling. "Papa always said... be brave..."
Before the monsters could approach, a sudden burst of light filled the cavern.
"Over there!" A voice called out.
A group of hunters from the Hunters Guild rushed in, their weapons drawn. They were expecting to find monsters-but instead, they found something else.
One of the hunters, a swordsman, furrowed his brow. "What the-
The Unsettling Presence...
A while back, the cavern erupted with the snarls of goblins and the howls of dungeon jackals.
Fifteen hunters stood their ground, weapons flashing in the dim light as they clashed against the monsters.
An A-rank hunter leaped forward, slicing through a goblin's chest with precision. Nearby, a B-rank hunter bashed a dungeon jackal's skull with his war hammer, sending blood splattering across the stone floor.
The C-rank hunters, though struggling, held their own. One barely dodged a goblin's dagger, stumbling backward before an A-rank hunter stepped in to finish the creature.
A pair of glowing golden eyes watched from a distance.
Cha Hae-In observed silently, arms crossed. She had no intention of interfering unless absolutely necessary. This was a test for the hunters, a way for them to prove their skills.
After several minutes of battle, the last of the monsters collapsed. The dungeon floor was littered with corpses, the hunters panting as they lowered their weapons.
Cha Hae-In finally approached.
"Good work," she said simply. Her voice was calm, but there was an undeniable authority to it. "You handled that well. However, don't let your guard down yet. The dungeon hasn't been fully cleared."
The A-rank leader of the squad nodded. "Understood."
She glanced around, her sharp instincts picking up something subtle-something off.
"Continue patrolling," she instructed. "I'll be heading back to the mining area to check on the excavation team. If anything seems unusual, report it immediately."
The hunters saluted. "Yes, ma'am!"
With that, she turned and walked away.
The squad exchanged glances.
"She's cautious," one hunter muttered.
"She has every right to be," another replied. "Something about this dungeon doesn't feel normal."
...
The five hunters patrolling through the dimly lit cavern kept their weapons ready, but the tension of the dungeon had eased enough for casual conversation.
"You know," one of the B-rank hunters said, glancing around cautiously, "I never thought I'd actually see Cha Hae-In in person. She's even more beautiful up close than in photos or magazines"
Another hunter chuckled. "I know, right? She was called the The Dancer back in the day, I bet she was more beautiful than most celebrities"
"You could say that, even the most famous and hottest Actress, Yoo Soohyun. I still think Hunter Cha is better in terms of Beauty" an A-rank chimed in. "Truly! Unlike her, she is actively hunting, she was one of the strongest S-ranks in Korea for a reason."
The C-rank hunter of the group, clearly newer to the guild, hesitated before asking, "Was she really that powerful?"
One of the A-rank hunters scoffed. "You're kidding, right? She was one of the few people in the world who could sense mana so clearly that she'd get sick around high-level hunters. And she was one of the best swordswomen we've ever had. " Adding another comment. "Not only that, She's the Vice Guildmaster of the Hunters!"
"Still... no one compares to Sung Jin-Woo" another B-rank hunter added, grinning.
The mood shifted slightly, the name Sung Jin-Woo carrying a weight that demanded respect.
"That man was a monster," one of the A-ranks said, shaking his head in awe. "He took down the Ant King on Jeju Island, when the entire country was desperate. Then there was the Japan S-rank dungeon break-he cleared it alone."
"And don't forget when he beat Thomas Andre, the freaking Goliath of the Scavenger Guild," another added. "That fight was legendary."
The C-rank looked around at the others. "I heard a rumor... that he and Cha Hae-In went on a date at an amusement park once."
Silence fell for a moment before someone laughed. "An S-rank date, huh? Were they actually together?"
"Well, aren't they?"
"You kidding? We don't know if they are confirm a couple, in fact it's only a date-"
Before they could continue, the air suddenly grew heavy.
A pulse of dark energy rippled through the cave.
The five hunters froze.
A presence deep, powerful, and suffocating emerged ahead.
Their hands instinctively gripped their weapons. Something was there.
They had been casually joking about the strongest hunter in history yet now, they felt as if they were standing before a force beyond their comprehension.
And then, they saw it. An unsettling presence of the unknown has appeared to there very eyes.
...Do you feel that?" murmured a B-rank hunter, his grip tightening on his sword.
The others fell silent. A strange aura pulsed ahead of them, thick and suffocating, like the presence of something vast and unknown.
The C-rank hunter shivered. "That... that doesn't feel normal."
One of the A-ranks raised a hand, signaling caution. "Stay together. Whatever's ahead is giving off pressure beyond anything we should be dealing with in this dungeon."
The cavern was silent, save for the unsteady breaths of the five hunters. Their grips on their weapons tightened as they stared into the darkness ahead.
A figure sat in the shadows, unmoving. Its form was shrouded in the abyss, but what stood out piercing through the darkness were two glowing blue eyes.
The hunters stiffened.
"That... that doesn't look like a monster," one of them whispered, yet his instincts screamed at him to run.
Then, it moved.
The figure slowly stood up. The air grew heavier.
Each deliberate motion sent an eerie shiver through the hunters' spines, as if the darkness itself had awakened.
Then came the footsteps.
One step.
The sound echoed, unnaturally deep.
Another step.
The cave itself seemed to shrink around them, suffocating them with the sheer weight of the presence approaching.
A third step.
Something shifted behind the figure. The darkness thickened, solidified, stretching unnaturally-its shadow was no longer that of something small.
It was something greater.
Something bigger.
Something that should not belong to a child.
The hunters' eyes widened in horror as the shadow behind it began to move.
"HOLY SHIT!"
Then, the figure stepped into the light.
The fear they held shattered in an instant.
Standing before them was not some monstrous entity. Not a beast or an unknown terror.
Just a small boy.
He clutched a teddy bear, his blue eyes blinking at them in confusion.
"...Hello?" his tiny voice called out.
The hunters exchanged baffled glances.
A boy? Here? In a dungeon?
They almost laughed at their own paranoia almost.
Yet, hidden behind the small, innocent shadow of the child, the darkness lingered.
For the briefest moment, something in the abyss shifted, as if watching.
But none of them noticed.
