May 2001:
i went into the drug lockup.
"abby told me that you got a phone call"
"hm?" carter sounded, i leaned against the wall.
"from northwestern?"
his face was blank.
"were you gonna tell me about that?" i smiled
"keeping my options open" he shrugged
i nodded my head, walking back out.
i was confused why he'd keep that away from his girlfriend of all people.
then again, it didn't really feel like we were a couple these days.
"gianna?" luka said from outside
"what's up?"
"how's the gsw you saw?"
"third in line for a tally" i smiled
this day was going crazy so far. we had three gsws come in. pretty weird for all one day.
"g" malik shouted
"we need some o-neg in here"
"right on it" i shouted back
i went to the cooler and grabbed two more bags of blood. then, i hung it up on the line.
i connected it to the transfuser.
"alright new unit is in"
"we got another incoming gsw"
god.
"et?"
"ten minutes out"
"crazy day"
"there must be a drive by" malik said
"yeah" i sighed

earlier a while foster care center was shot up.
i was irrigating my third wound of the day.
"sorry" i smiled
the boy winced as the saline went on his cut.
"i'm gonna get you a bandage for this, okay?"
he nodded his head as i unraveled the wrapping, and put it over his hand.
"is there anyone i can call?"
"the doctor said my dad is on his way" he nodded
"okay" i smiled
"is there anything i can get you in the meantime?"
"i think i'm okay"
"okay, i'll be right back"
soon after, the er had cooled down a bit.
there was a grace period i guess.
"haleh, im just gonna head out for a minute"
"call me back in if you need me"
"sounds good, gianna" she smiled
i headed outside to take a walk.
i let out a sigh. the day had been so stressful and i don't think i'd ever seen so many gsw's come in on the course of one day.
i was stressed out and my head was pounding.
however, i was walking down the block when a car sped past me.
those are the types of drivers that keep our ER running.
i walked further down the block before i heard gunshots. i turned around, running toward the corner.
a woman let out a scream.
the car shot another man before driving off, then, shooting a car. the glass from the window broke, a shard hitting me.
"jesus christ" i scoffed, running toward the lady.
i dug into my pocket, pulling out a clean pair of gloves.
"you work at county?" i asked the woman who was bleeding out.
she nodded her head.
"in the icu" she winced.
i looked at her stomach that was bleeding out.
"i'm in the ER" i smiled
"that guy, something about his kid"
"he's looking for his kid" she panted
my eyes went wide.
"oh my god"
"what?" she asked
"i'm gonna get you and that man over there help, okay?"
"can you stay here for a minute?"
"yeah" she nodded
"i'm gianna, okay?"
"gianna, i'm nicole"
"i'll be right back, nicole"
"where's carter?" i asked randy.
i sprinted as fast as i could to the hospital.
"we've been wondering where you've been" she said
"what happened to your head?"
i was out of breath
"glass hit me" i panted
"where's carter?" i repeated
"he's out with abby" lydia said
"of course he is"
"what happened gianna?" mark asked
"derek fossen" i panted
"he's the one"
"what?"
"he's the killer on the loose"
"he's trying to find ben"
"what?"
i shook my head, mark went pale.
"there's two gsw's outside"
"we need to lockdown"

after the police talked to me, adele newman came in after being shot by him.
luka was putting a butterfly bandage on my cut.
"so what's happening?" luka asked, throwing his gloves out.
i stood up, off the gurney.
"the other day this kid came in with clear signs of abuse"
"the child went to foster care"
he raised an eyebrow
"so, the dad went on a killing spree?"
"i guess so" i shrugged
"i was walking down the block to get some fresh air and that's when the two nurses from our hospital got shot"
"god" he sighed
"well, that's why we're locked down" i smiled
"yeah, at least we're all okay" he nodded
"hey, gianna?" mark shouted
"need help?" i asked
"not with this"
"can you try to get elizabeth on the phone for me?"
"sure" i nodded
"is everything okay?"
"i hope so" he said, before going back into the trauma room.
i opened one of the drawers in the admit desk, flipping through a large phone book.
then, i dialled marks home phone.
three rings,
nothing.
i tried that three more times.
i also left two voicemails.
"randy, can you keep trying for me?" i asked
she nodded her head, taking over the phone.
i went into the trauma room.
"mark?"
"did you hear from her?"
i shook my head "no, she's not answering the phone"
"dammit" he sighed
"how many times?"
i looked back at the admit desk.
"this'll be the fifth"
an officer peeked in the doorway.
"want me to send units out?"
"yes" mark said

just like that, the day was over.
i dealt with nicole, she was now recovering from surgery.
i went up to see her, she thanked me for helping her.
elizabeth and baby ella was perfectly safe at home.
fossen died in the elevator going up to surgery with mark.
adele newman was in recovery, too. it wasn't looking so good, though.
i ran a hand through my hair, walking down the ambulance bay.
"havent seen you all day" carter said, running up to me.
i stopped walking and turned around.
"what happened?" he asked, pointing to my forehead
i let out a scoff.
"what?"
i shook my head "nothing"
"will you tell me why you're upset?"
"i'm not" i smiled
"really?"
"it's been a long day, and i want to go home"
"you're mad that i was with abby earlier?"
i shook my head
he tilted his head "i'm not!"
i looked at my feet "i just wish you would tell me important things before her"
"it's not like that" he said, defensively
"i didn't say anything was like anything"
"every time something important happens in with abby and i never tell you anything" he mocked
"carter"
"what can i do go prove to you th-"
"i'm going home"
a/n: i woke up this morning and thought, omg why don't i start adding dates to these parts?? so, from now onwards, the month and year that each part takes place will be included. on my last fic, i figured out specific dates, but i'm not going to do that this time around. i hope you enjoyed this part, it was great to write. also, as of sometime in the past few parts, carter and gianna are dating.. i'm sorry i didn't really make that fully clear until now. this part went under major editing today, right now, so i hope it makes sense. anyway, we're moving onto season 8 on tuesday.. it's gonna be a fun one.
