conrad had just returned from his morning surf when he ran into his mother,
"hey connie, so i have a big favour i need from you" the older woman said with a large smile on her face
"yeah, what's up" conrad shook the water from his hair
"i want you to ask belly to be her escort to the deb ball" the boy's mother moved closer to him with every word
"mom i can't"
"why" susannah's eyebrows furrowed, "if it's because of noa, i figured one of her school friends or even one of her brothers could take her"
"i don't really want to ditch my girlfriend who already asked me to the ball like two weeks ago, for belly because she can't get an escort" conrad rolled his eyes at his mother's suggestion
"i don't think noa would mind, she's a very thoughtful and considerate girl conrad" susannah continued to try and convince her son
"exactly she thinks about other people more than herself, so i'm putting her first and helping her put herself first" conrad tried to walk away from his mother before she stopped him,
"connie you know how much it will mean to her if you ask her"
"mom stop, i'm taking my girlfriend to that goddamn ball, not belly." he pulled his arm form her grasp walking away, "tell jeremiah to ask her, i hear they're close now"

noa had finally woken up, the james girl noticing her boyfriend had left to go meet cleveland, she began to get ready for the day before heading downstairs to see if anyone was hanging around.
"hey you" jeremiah smiled as he saw the girl
"hey" noa smiled back as she watched jeremiah turn back to look at belly in the garden as his mother painted her,
"so i'm assuming the crush is finally crushed?" noa poked him in his side
"huh?"
"your little crush on me, connie told me, i'm assuming it's over based on who you're staring at" noa chuckled
jeremiah's cheeks flushed red before he scratched the back of his neck,
"yeah it's over, i've definitely got my eye on someone else" he smiled thinking about belly
"oh i'm very aware i saw your pool kiss the other night"
"you saw that?" jeremiah's face dropped in shock
"oh i most definitely saw that, quite passionate, don't you think?" she teased the boy lifting her eyebrows, "so are you gonna ask to be her escort?"
"i don't know we'll see, i think she still has her dream guy in her head" jeremiah dropped his head thinking about bellys infatuation with his older brother,
"conrad?"
"how do you know about that?"
"it's obvious isn't it?" noa shook her head, "the heart eyes, the almost kiss on the dock, and several conversations i've over heard it sounds like she's been after him for a while, i almost feel dumb being with him while she's in the picture"
"you don't really feel like that do you" jeremiah looked at the girl with sadness in his features
"sometimes, i guess, it's silly, i shouldn't have said anything" the james girl shrugged,
"it's not silly noa, it's how you feel, but you should know conrad loves you so much i don't think anything could stop him form being with you, belly or not" jeremiah tried to comfort the girl

"are you sure you don't want to compete?" conrad asked his girlfriend, "we could be a late entry"
"no it's really fine, i'm not very good at volleyball anyway" noa smiled
"i could carry our team though"
"no we should let belly have something to herself, i feel like i've been sharing all of her things with her all summer" the girl ran her fingers through her boyfriend hair as his head laid in her lap, the pair basking in each other's company
"you shouldn't feel like you have to share with her just because she's been here more than you no" conrad looked up at the girl
"this is her summer life connie, i feel like i've caused a bit of a disruption for her, i should have just stayed in boston, there wouldn't be all this drama" she smiled sadly at the boy,
"but then i wouldn't get to spend everyday with you like this, i would mopey here while you party it up in boston" conrad tried to bring a smile to his girlfriend's face
"me partying it up? are you sure you even know me?" she chuckled
"i was just trying to make you laugh, and it seems i was successful" conrad smiled as he reached up to poke one of the girl's dimples making her squirm
"hey actually i have to tell you something" conrad's words bringing them both back into reality,
"what is it?"
"mom asked me the weirdest thing" the boy furrowed his eyebrows unsure if he should continue telling noa what happened with his mom
"what did she want?" noa asked,
"um, actually don't worry"
"you are literally the worst storyteller ever, just tell me what happened, i won't care if it's about me" she rolled her eyes,
"uh okay," the boy took a breath, "she asked me to take belly to the deb ball"
"oh"
"i said no" he jumped in,
"why would she ask that?" noa grew confused,
"something about belly really liking it" the boy shook his head, "um belly has had a crush on me for a while"
"trust me, i'm very aware of the crush"
"oh" conrad didn't know what to say, "my mom just thought it would make belly really happy, she said you could just take someone else, cause you know more guys than belly does so it would be easier"
noa couldn't help the anger that crawled through her skin, she was surprised her ears weren't bright red
"well maybe she's right" noa huffed, moving the boy's head of her lap moving to stand up, "i mean i know so many more guys than belly because i get around so much"
"noa you know that's not she meant, don't bring this fight back up again"
"i'm sorry i just thought your mother had moved on from thinking i was some slut that cheated on her son because she saw me at a grocery store with my brother for fucks sake" noa rolled her eyes, she hated when this topic got brought up because of how much her and susannah had moved on from it, but when the woman would make certain comments she couldn't hold back anymore.
"noa stop" conrad jumped up to grab the girl and cup her red face featuring teary eyes "you know that is not what she meant, and i have no idea why on earth she would even bring up me taking belly but i shut it down immediately because you are my girlfriend and the deb ball will be about you not just belly, so i am taking you to that ball no one else"
"even though deb ball's are for sheep?"
"yes even though deb ball's are for sheep" the boy chuckled
