“as long as we keep being honest with each other, we will be alright” Ippei said, you just got back from the cafeteria, missing the conversation between enji and banda, but you were hungry and wanted something other than stale crackers
“or not”
right then, a man was thrown from one of the halls
“i told you to tell me the answer!” the bald man yelled at the boy, banda moved from this place on the floor to grab him
“are you alright?” he leaned closer to whisper into his ear “tell him hes a club”
the man looked at the boy on the floor again “do you want another beating?! huh?!” he grabbed him by his hair and punched him
“club! club, you’re a club!”
the man smiled “don’t wait so long next time” and he threw him on the ground
when he walked by us ippei saw that he was actually a diamond and gasped, but chishiya shushed him quickly
“now the game is really starting”
“which is it wrong to say he kind of deserves it?” you whispered “you shouldn’t be using violence here anyway”
you didn’t do much nor speak for the entire round, only getting the answer to your suit, which was spade
you could tell ippei felt guilty for not telling the man that he was lied to, but he didn’t do anything about it
the round ended and only he died, you decide to explore the prison, there weren't many rooms besides the cafeteria and a couple bathrooms, but almost everyone stayed in the cafeteria or the main room, chishiya followed you, not giving you any time to yourself
you came back when it was time for everyone to discuss their suits, everyone was in the cafeteria, and you watched as urumi lied about someone’s suit while chishiya ate cookies looking unbothered
the round ended and we went back to the main hall
“looks like everyone is getting nervous” chishiya said “they said there was no time limit, but i’m not sure we’ll find the jack at all”
back in the cafeteria, the time inbetween rounds there was nothing to do, ippei was a kind person, but he was getting more scared by the round, which made him impossible to talk to, and chishiya was not talkative in the first place, so you sat bored with a sucker in between your lips for most of the round
two rounds went by while you were bored of your mind, before you knew it, the sixth round was here
ippei was passing back and forth in the halls
“why are they all lying to each other?!”
“are you really surprised? nobody wants to be the next to die” chishiya said
“it’s all because of urumi, she’s convincing everyone to lie, just because one person wanted to save himself from being beaten every round” you sighed “if she weren’t here, i feel like this game would be a lot longer, if anything, she’s making it faster”
“do you think shes the jack?” ippei asked
you shook your head “she’s being way too obvious if she was, i think shes just a psycho”
after many rounds, you walked alone without chishiya or ippei by your side, the remaining players were in the cafeteria so you could be alone for a couple minutes, ippei would kill himself in the next round, and you wanted to stop him, he was a kind character, it was unfortunate the end his life ended
just as you were thinking, you felt the presence of another person behind you, you whipped around and made eye contact with them, it was… banda sunato
“what are you doing here?” you asked
“i could ask you the same thing, everyone else is in the cafeteria, but you’re here instead, why?”
“i just wanted to be alone, it’s kinda hard to get privacy in a place like this”
“especially with him around, huh? his name was chishiya, right? he follows you around like a guard dog, it’s been very hard to try and get you alone” he walked closer to you and you unconsciously took a step back
“are you scared of me?” he asked, with every step forward he took, you took one back
your back landed on the wall as he came closer than before
he whispered in your ear “lie to one of them, either of them will do, i don’t care what you tell them, being in a group where you are either being guarded or having to comfort someone is annoying, isn’t it? if you get rid of them, you can come with us instead, won’t it be fun?”
you couldn’t respond, he was so close to you, you could feel his breath on your neck when he leaned down, but the intercom announced five minutes were left inside the round
“what is your answer?” he moved away, you let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding, you gulped and nodded, he smirked and walked away
that was…wow
obviously, you didn’t lie to chishiya or ippei, but ippei was killed anyway
chishiya walked pass the room ippei had gone in, seeing his lifeless body through the door
“you were too kind for this world, ippei” chishiya actually let out a sigh, ippei was a really trustworthy person, he truly was too kind for the world he was forced into
“i guess that makes it just you and me, huh?” chihsiya looked to you and you looked down
“i want you to pretend like you don’t trust me” chishiya raised his eyebrow
“why?”
“someone told me to lie to one of you, and now they’re going to think i actually did, i want you to pretend like you don’t trust me, because of his death, i will still tell you your suit, but we will split up, and i will act like ill join them”
everyone else had gotten out of their stalls, ippei was the only one dying this round
you and chishiya made eye contact before he walked away, listening to your plan, you faked sadness as he walked away, biting your lip and looking down, catching the way enji and banda looked at you out of the corner of your eye
you grabbed a bag of gummies and lemon flavored oishi tea from the cafeteria and left, passing by enji on the way out, chishiya was inside aswell, you already told him his suit, but he would lie and pretend like he had no idea
you made eye contact with enji and he gave you a slight smile which you returned before going to a blank expression, going into the main hall
chishiya watched as enji grabbed a packet of some sort of snack, this time he grabbed the white one
“these ones taste better” enji looked at him and didn’t speak “would you mind telling me what my suit is?” enji said nothing and went to walk past him
“you know, that guy you hang out with, you should know that he’s a murderer” enji turned at this “what?”
“his name is sunato banda, it was in the newspaper, murdered four women which makes him a serial killer, and you know, thats punishable by death”
“you’re lying”
“its true, i think hes the jack of hearts, theres only six of us left, time is running out, so the jack is gonna start to get aggressive now, we might as well tell each other our suits” chishiya started to walk closer to enji “for the moment, you’re in a good position, the jack still trusts you, so if anyone is going to lie to the jack, it has to be you, which means this game can only end one way, the key player here is you”
“i’m sure this is a lot to take in, and you don’t trust me yet, for what its worth, theres no advantage for me to lie so i will tell you the truth about your symbol, don;t you want to make sure that banda’s telling you the truth?”
“what makes you think that i would trust you over him?” enji said without turning his back
“you don’t have to if you don’t want to, if i were in your shoes i’d want to weigh my options, and ive got no reason to lie to you, banda’s a murderer, and thats a fact”
“i still don’t trust you”
“fine, you’ll see for yourself once the next round is over, you’re a spade, just so you know, so would you tell me mine?” chishiya turned around, his hair was already parted so he could see his symbol clearly “come on, i told you what yours is”
“i never agreed to this” he began to walk away, but stopped and looked back “heart” he told chishiya, then left the room
but chishiya already knew, you told him it was diamond
his suspension of the other grew
you were in the main hall, sat on the table in the middle as you fiddled around with your bottle when enji walked back in
“what’s happening?” banda said without looking towards him
“i think the jack of hearts is that guy” he pointed at the screen, over to chishiya’s icon
“i thought he was suspicious too”
“don’t worry, he’ll die this round, you can trust me on that” banda smiled, but it looked more like a smirk if you really looked
you chewed on a gummy with no expression on your face, looking at banda, you were very bored, you just wanted the game to be over, enji would be fooled soon, and then you can leave, you found a bag one of the dead players left behind, so you planned on taking some of the food and drinks here
kotoko went to the cafeteria without yaba, grabbing the black packet of snacks, the same one that enji took before, stepping backward when chishiya appeared next to the racks
“there are only six of us left, the one i trusted lied and my other partner died because of her” kotoko fiddled with her drink and packet and started to walk away
“i asked that guy matsushita what my suit is, but he said he didn’t trust me, and i’m sure he lied to me, so would you mind telling me what it really is? if you want, i promise to tell yours in exchange, i don’t mean to assume, but you strike me as an honest person”
kotoko gulped, her breathing was unsteady, she wasn’t allowed to talk to any of the other players
“also, that yaba guy strikes me as a bit of a conman,a nd since you’re teamed with him, i thought you should know” he walked in front of her while speaking “your suit is a heart, now what about mine? it’s a club, isn’t it?”
kotoko actually came closer to see, but didn’t say anything and walked away
chishiya presented the bag of cookies he had been eating for the entire game “these taste better you know”
he walked out of the cafeteria, watching yaba walk to kotoko, and seeing you walking besides banda, even though he knew you weren’t really on his side and it was just a act, it was still strung the way you didn’t bother to sneak a glance at him
it was almost time for the end of the round, so you turned around and let enji tell you your suit
“Diamond” he said, you gulped and turned away, going to your cell
you breathed out once you closed the door, with 30 minutes remaining on the clock, you said your suit
an collar exploded, and the only door that opened was matsuhita enji’s
he walked out and looked around no one else opened their doors
he slowly smiled to himself “i won” and let out the most light yagami laugh i have ever heard
until a door opened
“i had a feeling you were the jack of hearts” chishiya revealed himself
“how did you-”
“you teamed up with banda from the start, and hes a murderer so it just makes sense, even if somehow you were moved by banda’s little monologue, i knew you wouldn’t trust him, you don’t trust strangers and certainly not as fast as that”
another door opened and banda walked out
“most people won’t even talk to a guy like me, but you wanted to kill me, i could sense it in you right away so i wanted to see if you were smart, or just stupid, or whether you were a true psychopath”
“you mean…:
“you thought you were controlling me the whole time, but i was manipulating you into thinking that way, ultimately it was your huge superiority complex that gave you away”
“that kind of self importance usually comes from being put inn a special position, something that made you feel untouchable, like being chosen as the jack” chishiya said
“you guys are wrong, banda is the jack of hearts!” he tried to accuse him, but then yaba walked in
you followed close after
“you and kotoko were connected” yaba said “i told her what her suit was and yet, she still died, which means kotoko was being manipulated by someone other than me”
“w-well, you should be accusing these two instead” he pointed at both you and chishiya
“everytime i went to the cafeteria, you and kotoko would always be there, getting snacks at the same time, and each time, you’d get the exact same kind of snack, you and kotoko were secretly communicating in the cafeteria, you were both pretending that you were being controlled, there are four different flavors of the snack, you would confirm your suits by checking the packaging using those as a code with each other, i caught on pretty quickly”
“and then, you told kotoko to give me the wrong suit, i really did trust her, except at the end”
“w-w-what about her?! you don’t even trust her anymore!” he said towards chishiya
“that was a lie” you said “i didn’t give ippei the wrong suit, he killed himself, i only told chishiya to act like he didn’t trust me” you also knew that enji lied to you, your suit was not diamond, it was a heart, banda had told you when you were walking together
you hadn’t had the time for chishiya to see yours when you told his, hoping that banda would stop you later and tell the truth, which he luckily did, even though you were scared he wouldn’t tell the truth at first
“when did you guys start working together?!”
“the very first announcement said that this game is about how much we can trust one another, so we simply followed that principle, in order to gain someones trust you can’t control or manipulate or guide them in any way, you can’t brainwash them or hypnotize them, lie to them or instill fear, its called equality” yaba said
“wait a second, what makes you so sure it’s me? the jack of hearts could easily be one of you guys, okay maybe i did try to blame everything on you by setting you up, but look! but thats enough, you guys dont have proof that im the jack of hearts, huh?” enji tried to defend himself
“you sure about that?” chishiya spoke
“huh?!”
“just think about it, if they suspected that you were the jack, then why did you survice this last round? why didn’t banda lie? tell you the wrong one? the reason you’re still alive is because you’re the jack” chishiya walked closer to him “and these guys planned to keep you alive, because they decided they want information out of you’
banda and yaba approached him, grabbed his arms and threw him into one of the cells
[did anyone else notice in this scene banda’s actor hits his head coming in? lol i love how it was kept in]
it wasn’t long after when you got to leave the game arena, walking out chishiya had his hands in his pocket, while you had the bag mentioned earlier filled with a variety of snacks and drinks, hoping to give them out to the others once you found them
you had a sucker placed in your mouth aswell, looking like a true girlboss as the jack of hearts blimp exploded behind you
chishiya looked back for a second and began to walk off, following you who hadn’t stopped even after the loud sounds of the explosion
“where you going to go? i think i’ll go for king of diamonds”
you pulled the sucker out of your mout and shrugged “ill rest a bit, and then probably go to queen of spades” he nodded
“see you later, then?” you smiled “see you later, don’t die, kay?” you said
“you too” he smiled and the two of you parted ways ont your own games
