"It is what you don't expect... that most needs looking for."
Neal StephensonMei didn't know exactly when she had eventually passed out– the influx of memories and realizations apparently exhausting her brain enough to let her sleep.
However, she still woke up before Hyodo, and she looked to the hotel window in confusion as the sun rose over Mount Fuji and painted the landscape with yellow and blue rays of light.
She reached for her phone, which sat charging on the bedside table, letting her jaw drop as she realized she wasn't still dreaming and it truly was 8 o'clock in the morning.
Hyodo shuffled slightly at her side, and Mei watched him with a slight scowl. She didn't want to believe that she had actually fallen asleep beside him after all of her varying thoughts last night.
So, she remained as silent as she could as she rolled out of the bed slowly. Once her feet reached the floor, she softly traveled around the hotel room, gathering the things she had brought and stuffing them back into her small suitcase. Luckily, it was only a weekend away, so she hadn't packed much.
"What are you doing?" Hyodo asked sleepily, and Mei froze in her tracks before slowly turning to look at him. He rubbed at his eyes before leaning back against a bent elbow, looking to Mei in pure confusion before repeating, "what were you doing?"
"Packing."
At this, he lifted himself from the bed, and Mei wanted to take a t-shirt from her suitcase and throw it at his bare chest.
"Why are you packing? We have the room until like, 9 PM." He asked quickly, standing beside her as she stared down at the inside of her messy suitcase.
"I don't want to be here."
Hyodo placed a hand on her shoulder before turning her to face him, and Mei averted her eyes to the floor to avoid direct eye contact.
"What's that mean?" He asked– a bit too loud for the morning. "Do you not like the hotel? How can you not? It was a lot of money, you know?"
"Jeez, I think I got that the first time you said it."
"If you get how much money I spent then why aren't you enjoying yourself?" Hyodo gave her a glare, and Mei finally rolled her eyes before shoving Hyodo's hand off of her shoulder.
She turned back to her suitcase for just a moment, bending to reach for one of the large t-shirts that her and Hyodo share. After bunching it into her hand, she threw it at him, accompanied with a, "oh, I didn't realize you just threw money at all your problems."
Hyodo ignored the shirt entirely, holding it in his hand as he tried to step out in front of Mei once more.
"My problems? The one with problems here is you."
"Excuse me?" Mei stopped in her tracks, finding herself completely taken aback by Hyodo's attitude.
"You heard me! The only one with problems here is you." Hyodo repeated harshly, and Mei felt her chest constrict as the reality of the situation dawned on her. "I do so much for you, and you don't appreciate it. Do you even realize all of the things I do for you?"
Mei let out a quiet gasp as Hyodo threw the shirt back at her. She let it hit the floor before she narrowed her eyes back at Hyodo. "I never asked you to do anything for me. I never even asked for this vacation, so stop shoving it in my face and whining about how much money it cost you! Fine, tell me just how much it was and I'll even pay you back."
"You wouldn't even be able to," Hyodo let out with a smug laugh. "Your stupid book royalties barely leave you any money to spend on yourself after rent and bills."
