Pinky swears are taken very seriously
within the five, never to be broken.
But maybe there's an exception
when it comes to love.

━━THE DAY WAS A PARTICULARLY HOT ONE IN CASTLE ROCK, OREGON. Cassidy opted to wearing a tank-top, to which Teddy whistled at and Cassidy, Chris, and Gordie proceeded to smack him for.
Cassidy's friend group consisted of five people: Teddy, Chris, Gordie, Vern, and herself.
If it wasn't already obvious, Teddy Duchamp was the loud-mouthed, childish one of the group. He always a had a quip prepared, and cursed about three times as much as Cassidy did. He wore thick-rimmed glasses, and a hearing aid he only needed because his dad held his ear to the stove and nearly burned it off.
Vern Tessio was a chubby, sweet boy who was probably the most oblivious person Cassidy had ever met. He ran late a lot of the time, and every time, without fail, got the secret knock for the treehouse wrong.
Chris and Cassidy Chambers were fraternal twins who were as close as can be. Growing up in the type of household they did, they were all they had. Their older brother, Richard (who dubbed himself "Eyeball" now), found joy in harassing his younger siblings with the horrible group he ran around with. Despite coming from a bad family, the two were anything but. Sure, Chris (and rarely, Cassidy) got into a fight, but it was almost always provoked. The twins would probably have people lining up to date them if the people of Castle Rock didn't care so much about their reputation.
And last, but definitely not least, was Gordie Lachance. He was the smartest of the group (save Cassidy, and even Chris— they had both proven to everyone that they weren't just some lowlife Chambers kid), and came from a good, respectable family. The opposite of the Chambers twins. Unfortunately, he lost his older brother, Denny, a few years back, and since then his parents have cared even less about what he did, or him in general. Unlike his parents, though, Cassidy cared about Gordie a lot. Much more than she would like to admit.
When Gordie's brother died, he went into a slump, and the main reason he got out of the slump was Cassidy. She was patient with him, and she was there. And during that time, both of the twelve year-olds developed feelings for one another. Of course, neither of them knew of the other's feelings, and preferred to keep it that way.
Plus, Cassidy wasn't sure what would even happen if Gordie did reciprocate her feelings. When they were ten, Chris made the boys pinky swear that they wouldn't make any moves on Cassidy, and pinky swears were taken very seriously within their friend group.
Granted, that pinky swear was made roughly six years ago, and Cassidy was sure that if she told Chris about her feelings he would be fine with Gordie dating her— if he even wanted to, that is. But she didn't feel like letting Chris know anything about her feelings for their best friend, because it would result in a ton of teasing, and she was almost 100% sure he would run straight to Gordie and tell him.
