Chapter Twenty-five

A tad bit dramatically had Theodore savored the last of his fries as they talked and joked. He'd taken small bites and - against all social etiquette- had gone as far as to double dip in an attempt to stall.

They had simply gotten out to get food.

Objective clear and simple.

A basic human need.

Everybody had to eat.

But now they had, and staying longer would only enforce the feeling that something purely practical was perhaps something more, for Theodore's mind was still screaming date date date.

When it wasn't chanting I like you, I like you, I like you, that is.

He closed his eyes and massaged his temples like he would had he been suffering from a migraine.
He felt like he was two more silly thoughts away from one.

His eyes met Gabriel's when he opened them again.

And gods his eyes were such a beautiful shade of blue.

And the hint of genuine worry in them warmed his chest and...now he had a headache.

He got up and cleared the picnic table in the progress, "Are we off?"

A little caught off guard by Theodore's sudden haste to leave did Gabriel reluctantly nod and get up also.

With the radio playing and Gabriel drumming along with the beat (two seconds offbeat, really) on the steering wheel it almost felt like they were on a roadtrip going wherever.

It was a nice little fantasy that shattered the moment his house came into view.

Gabriel parked the car.
He reached for the off button on the radio, but his hand hovered in front of it when Time after time came on.
Wordlessly, the two boys sat and listened.

The song ended and Theodore made a move to get out of the car but got held back by the seat belt he'd forgoten he was still wearing. His cheeks colored a deeper shade of pink while he struggled unfastening.

Their hands touched when Gabriel helped him unbuckle. Neither of them pulled away.
