Splink took one last look at the small lizard that was slowly growing larger and larger in size. She felt kinda guilty about making the poor creature into a huge lizard. She turned and ran into the woods, fire rising within her. She ran for a while, then had to stop so she could breath, it hurt to take the gasping sharp intakes of breath. She sat down next to a willow and caught her breath. She reflected on the choices she had made earlier. Splink realized she acted like a baby and covered her face in embarrassment and rage. She looked over as a squirrel came up to her tilting its head as it sniffed her hand. She chuckled lightly, then jerked her head up as a loud noise sounded nearby. The squirrel skittered away and Splink sighed.
She got up and went towards the noise to see where it came from. When she entered the clearing, she saw a bird trapped helplessly under a branch that had fallen on top of it. It strained and was singing a sad and painful song, desperate to escape the pain. Splink stared at the bird for a moment, frozen to the ground. She blinked and shook her head then helped the bird escape. But, it was injured and it couldn't take flight. Splink watched the bird as it tried to fly into the sky, looking up as other birds flew past. She watched, trying to stop the memories from forming in her head. But they came anyways, over and over again. Each time more painful than the last.
When she was 7, she had lived in a bigger and nicer house with her family. She was happy even though they lived in a depressing world. But, one morning, her dad came in and gave them all a piece of candy. That was a big deal. It was so hard to get candy and incredible that he got enough pieces for the whole family. Before they could eat, a knock was at the door and the person who originally had the candy wanted it back. They argued, but the person at the door became enraged and used his powers to destroy her house, and everything in it. Splink's dad saw what was happening before it happened, and got them all out. They ran to the nearby woods, and tried to flee from the now terrifying and large demon following in pursuit. But, the demon kept coming, and in order to keep them safe, her dad stayed back to fight him. Her scared mother argued that it wasn't safe, but he didn't budge. And, when the huge demon came to them, her dad fought him. But he was too much, and her father had to retreat. But, as he was running towards his family and away from the demon, a large branch fell on top of him and he couldn't move. Splink watched her dad's eyes, and screamed for him to move. But, the demon, now having easy prey, disintegrated him. After that, the demon left them. And they stood there, her mom in her beautiful black and white pearled dress and her older brother holding Splink while she screamed into his shirt. They just stood there, shocked as the specks flew away. After that, they found out that her father had stolen the candy. Yes, both the illegally made candy and stealing had been breaking the law. The guy that killed her dad went to prison for murder and illegal food making. Then they had to move to a poor town after that and tried to forget about it. But it was really difficult, since Splink and her dad were really close.
The bird screeched and it jerked Splink back into reality. She gently picked up the bird, tears running down her cheeks. "I'm sorry. I should have done something..." she said, more to the air than the bird. She used her powers and healed the bird, then watched it fly into the sky, chirping happily. Splink watched it go, wishing she could be free from her pain, just as the bird had done.
