Chapter 9

I wake up to the sun shining through my window. Wow, pretty nice day for winter I think as I pull the covers over my eyes.

"Mari! Get up we are going to the store today." I hear my mother yell down the hall, probably in the kitchen.

"What time is it?" I groan as I roll over to grab my phone. I squint and see its almost 10. I throw off my blankets and stand up. I throw on my jeans and a black long sleeved shirt. I run into the bathroom brush my hair and walk into the kitchen.

"Morning" I say as I walk into the kitchen with smell of coffee brewing in the air.

"Morning" my dad says not taking his eyes off his crossword puzzle.

"Where are we going?" I ask as I help myself to a cup of coffee.

"I think your mother is buying birthday presents for your aunt."

"Yes! Let me go grab my wallet, I have a great idea for Jill!" I yell as I run back into my room. I grab my wallet and run back down the hall to see my mother exit her bedroom.

"Marian Acker come on!"

"Okay, okay let me throw on my shoes I'll be out!"

"Meet me in the car."

I throw on my shoes and a coat and rush out to the car. I sit shotgun and feel the warm air from the heater as I sit down.

"So where are we going?"

"I figured we could probably find something at the mall for Jill."

"Sounds good. She's still into scarves at the moment right? Because I saw a really pretty one that would match her eyes."

"She would probably love a scarf, I'm guessing you saw the scarf last time you and Arthur hit the arcade."

"Yup, saw it in the window of a store, hopefully it's still there, it was beautiful."

"The mall it is then."

I really don't live too far from the mall, it's probably a twenty minute drive. I live in the suburbs, plenty of neighbors but it's not a noisy neighborhood. I plug in my headphones and listen to music till we get to the mall.

"Well here we are, where do you want to head first?"

"I was thinking I could head after the scarf and meander some other stores while you pick out a gift."

"Okay, you have your cell on you so I know where you are?"

"Yes, I have my cellphone and a wallet."

"Here's a ten for the scarf in case it's too expensive, I'll text you when I find something"

"Okay mom" I say as I walk into the mall. She veers off in the opposite direction of myself and I ride the escalator to the bottom floor. I quickly locate the arcade and walk into the store I saw. Just as I remember there's a beautiful blue scarf in the front.

"May I help you?" Asks a girl who came up beside me.

"Hi, um yes, I'd love to get this scarf please."

"Alright I can bring it to the checkout for you."

"Thank you" I say as I follow the girl up front.

"Let me just ring that up for you," she says while she types in the code. "That will be 19.99"

"Okay," I say as I fish a twenty out of my wallet.

"That will be all, here's your scarf," she says as she hands me the bag. As I walk out of the store my phone buzzes.

"Mari did you find the scarf? I got Jill a present and now I'm shopping for myself"

"I've got the scarf, and I'm going to go shop at hot topic."

"Have fun, text you when we should leave."

I walk through the crowds of people on my way to my favorite store. Hot topic, the merch for all fandoms and goths alike.

I walk into the store and begin to look around. I think this time I'm going to get a dress or a shirt, I'm not sure.

"Hi welcome to hot topic can I help you with anything?"

"No I'm just browsing, thank you."

I walk over to see the Harry Potter section, followed by the anime and disney. To my right is all of the supernatural and doctor who merch and straight ahead is the bands and graphic tees.

I browse the store looking for a while. Everything just looks so great how can I choose? I finally settle upon a supernatural dress, shaped to look like Castiel's trench coat and a Hogwarts backpack. I hurriedly buy my things and head out the door. My phone buzzes.

"I'm done shopping, meet you in the car."

I take my bags and sprint to the door but to my dismay I run into a boy. I take a quick glance up at the boy, mutter my apologies, gather my things and I run out to the car.

Mom isn't in the car yet but she unlocks the doors for me on the far side of the parking lot. I throw my bags in the back seat and sit in the front again. I open the mirror to fix my hair from the fall. That's when I see my face and I can't help but scream.
