It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a one-night stand.
As a lopsided smirk grew on Casper's chiselled face, he strolled through the centre of the room with his hand in a continuous waving position like the bloody Queen, and honest to God, I was moments away from jumping from my plastic chair and strangling him with his own hideous, striped tie. He stopped beside Mike, who landed an affectionate tap onto his back, then spun around to face us.
'Hey, guys, it's great to meet you all,' he began as he ran his hand through his golden-brown quiff, and it was near impossible to resist making a gagging motion. 'I won't bore you with introductions, but prior to this, I was working as a Property Manager at Marsh & Parsons. I've heard awesome things about this team, and I can't wait to get stuck in!'
No, seriously, I desperately needed a sick bucket.
'And don't worry, I know I look young, but I promise that's only because I'm cursed with a baby face, hence the beard.'
He laughed as he ran his hand across his stubble that didn't remotely resemble a beard. His sense of humour clearly hadn't improved over the few weeks we'd spent apart, then.
'But I'm super open, love hearing new ideas, and am beyond keen to make this the best selling team across the whole of zone 1.'
Mike thanked Casper, then started clapping, which spurred the rest of the office to do so as if my mortal enemy hadn't just waltzed in and stolen my promotion. It was only at this point that such a reality hit me, that I realised I was still stuck in the same exhausting job I hated, which I'd sacrificed hours upon hours to for a promotion that had slipped between my fingers.
Safe to say, Casper's celebratory welcome to the team drinks that evening was more celebratory for some than others, and though I couldn't claim to be the office Team Leader, I did have the honour of claiming the title of ringleader of the circus my life was rapidly turning into. Dharsheni was certain I was joking when I messaged her to share the news of Casper's grand revival, and it took a strategic photo of him at my office building's bar for her to believe me.
