Prologue

Scorpio: Oct 22-Nov 21 "What is hidden is more interesting than what is obvious. Your magnetic personality draws others to you. But you can also be secretive yourself, for you learn early on that when you express everything, others may be scared by the power of your feelings. You desperately want to have someone to merge with your feelings, but can become cold and withdrawn when hurt in love. You have the magic to light up the dark, but sometimes you would benefit by looking at the positive side of things."

"I can't kiss you, Dan you know I am getting married!' Winter Reynolds tossed her shiny platinum hair over her shoulder and her grey eyes smouldered with indignation.

"Alex isn't here, Winter." Dan's tiger eyes sparkled with mischief as he lowered his head and closed his eyes. His mouth fluttered against hers, the kiss starting as tiny smooth swirls across her lips, then deepened as he slipped his tongue between her teeth. Winter groaned and clutched the lapels of his suit, kissing him back. "I can't Dan!" Her hands slid down to his chest, trying to push him away, but instead wanted to slip inside his buttoned up shirt, she felt the strength and warmth beneath the blue cotton which was all the motivation Winter needed to get her thoughts back on track. Closing her eyes and taking a deep breath she pushed his delectable lips away from her moist mouth. Shakily, she stepped back, using her hands to smooth down her skirt, so they couldn't betray her wanton thoughts by touching his smooth skin.

"We can't do this Dan, I can't do this to Alex".

"We already have", Dan smiled his crocodile smile and looked longingly into Winter's eyes. The air crackled between them and around them it felt like the world had stopped spinning. Neither of them noticed Melody, Winter's colleague striding into her office. "I've got the magazines you wanted Winter", her eyes opened wide in surprise at seeing Dan's sparkling eyes roaming Winter's face. Winter jumped guiltily then turned her flushed gaze to Melody, trying to retain her equilibrium. "Thanks Mel, this is a friend of Alex's, he was just leaving" she replied, smiling politely at Dan as she walked him to the door.

"I will see you again Winter, I believe we have unfinished business that needs attending to"

he whispered, smiling secretly at her as he turned and strode out the door.

"Whoa, what was that all about! Who was he? He is to die for!" Melody said, fanning her hand in front of her face and pretending to faint.

"Don't get excited, he was my boyfriend in university and a workmate of Alex's. Nothing is going on with him, he just stopped by to say hello" Winter said, hoping Melody wouldn't see the guilty glint in her eyes.

"Well, I wouldn't mind him saying hello to me, is he single?" Asked Melody hopefully.

"I don't know, he doesn't interest me that much, actually," Winter said nonchantly, "Let's take a look at those bridal magazines, I need to find a wedding dress". Winter concentrated on the photos in the magazines, making it clear to Melody that the subject was closed, if only her erratically beating heart could slow down and she wished that she could turn off her thoughts that easily too...but the memories came flooding back, haunting her, and teasing her, punishing her for her mistake...

................................

After work, Dan had appeared again in her office, and this time, they were unable to hold back their suppressed passion. Years of being in each other's arms as childhood sweethearts had taught them what each other liked, and when Dan kissed Winter below her earlobe, she knew that her fate was sealed, there was no going back now. Dan unbuttoned her shirt and she grabbed his belt and before they knew what was happening, they were on the plush carpet in each other's arms, bare skin glistening with sweat. Winter closed her eyes to block out the realisation that she had committed adultery. All that mattered in those moments was the passion and overwhelming sense of belonging she felt while in Dan's arms. Later she would explain, later she would face Alex, now she wanted to float on the cloud of passion and enjoy the moment. Little did she realise that this moment would be the turning point for her misery. That she would lose not just one lover but her heart and soul as well.
