For our longer read, here’s an enjoyable Marvel A.U. fanfic starring my favorite being from the Marvel universe. I also adore Scarlet Witch and Silver Surfer along with some of the more regular loves of the Marvel Universe like Iron Man, Black Panther, and Black Widow. Do you have any favorites among the more obscure or strange Marvel Beings? And was anyone else in love with that old Casper the Friendly Ghost movie?

Happy Halloween, Dios de los Muertos, and Samhain to all who celebrate!

I always approach fanfic with great caution. Mostly, it’s not my thing. But once I saw the subject of this one, I had to read it. Of all the Marvel Universe, I love Agent Carter the most. I was super disappointed that the show only got two very short seasons. My second favorite thing in the Marvel Universe is Iron Man, so Tony Stark making an early appearance certainly sweetened the deal for me. And we can tell from the title of this story that this is going to be the sweetest of all Alternative Universe wish fulfillments that we could ever wish for.

Though the storyline is A.U., the characters retain the personalities that we expect. Peggy’s voice is spot on from the very beginning. I love her internal reactions to the modern Avenger’s team, and to Tony’s version of Jarvis. Natasha is also portrayed in a very faithful way. This attention to keeping the character detail consistent with canon pleases me.

One of the things that I enjoy about both Marvel and DC is that there is a lot of room for alternate stories. It’s always fun to see a new take on things, be it from a new comic artist or from a dedicated fan writer. I like these sorts of stories best when they stay true to the source material and add a bit of original twist.

Peggy and Steve’s reunion was every bit as sweet as one might expect, and yet that’s only the start of the story! You know if Carter and Cap are back together, there is going to be some major villain ass-kicking coming up soon. We’re immediately launched into espionage and assassination that taxes all Steve and Peggy’s combined skills. Old enemies and decades-long plots won't be easy to defeat!

Fun action scenes and deft re-use of canon story elements make this a fun and exciting read. The inclusion of some teen Avengers is enjoyable as well, but there are a lot of them to keep up with. That also is very much in the Marvel style, so definitely not a complaint. I'm a little behind the curve with New Avengers, so it's a little hard for me to sort out who's an O.C. and who's from the canon. Nonetheless, I enjoyed them all!

Peggy is understandably melancholy about her change in circumstances. Even with her initial happy reunion with Steve, we'll be reading along to find out how things will work out for them. (and Bucky. You knew there was going to be some Bucky in here!) The story has a nice emotional depth to go along with the action. We're left wondering how the relationship angle of it all might turn out. As usual, we're pretty sure that the villains will be defeated. (For now.) And as usual, there are layers and layers of stakes beyond the immediate ass-kicking. High octane until the last word, and full of all the right notes to make it a believable and magical A.U. read.
