Grey nearly black clouds filled the skies. Soft cries and mumbled whispers came to a halt.
"The service will begin shortly. Keith and James come with me there is something we need to discuss." Pastor Simons said.
"Your parents on their wedding day joked that I was apart their vows. "Till death do us part; does it mean you gonna be at our funeral too?" Lance asked me sarcastically while Yolanda just giggled.
"Those two always kept the other smiling even if seem to hurt. Peas in a pod couldn't be closer." Pastor Simons said sighing deeply.
I look over at Keith who clenched his jaw and tried to hide every emotion behind his black sunglasses. "Look guys days like these are the hardest to get through."Pastor continues "Your parents asked me to give you this." He handed us each an envelope. "They're only rule was that you read them after the service. I'll give you both a minute and then the service will begin. My deepest condolences once again."Pastor Simons left us alone in his office.
"Dad would want me to open it."I said trying to lightening up the mood.
"Yeah and Mom would tell you to shut up and do what she said." Keith said with a tone of annoyance.
"Can't be a mamas boy forever."I mumble.
"Said the family fuck up." He harshly spat back. "Come to think of it none of this would have happened if you didn't sell out your own flesh and blood. All for some pussy that went ghost after getting her little revenge." Keith stood up and put his letter in his suit pocket.
"You don't know shit about her." I said trying my hardest to stay calm.
Keith laughed seemingly at me. "You just don't get it do you. James you only care about yourself. Lie to yourself all you want but I'm done with the bullshit. Look around we're at the funeral for both of our parents. Yet all you care about is yourself. All you've ever done was make trouble and then back out when shit gets thick."
"Aren't you done?" I said through my clenched jaw. The last thing I want to do is fight with Keith but he is testing me.
"One week before the plane crash they called me. Mom first then dad; she wanted to legally disown you. Said she didn't want you to walk around under the family name."Keith voice cracks as he continued. "Dad called me like clockwork right after her. Said that her medicine made her erratic and that she didn't mean it. I agreed with him and left it alone." Tears fell from his eyes as I fought back my own.
"She was right you know; always. She'd say Keith I'll never truly understand him. She said that loyalty was something you only gave to yourself. You never give a hundred percent to anything. Not this business or our family. Not even for Morgan."
Keith adjusted his suit "let's just go get this all over with."He said Before leaving . His voice was laced with sadness.
The entire funeral felt like a facade. Fake tears and hollow words about them being such nice people. No bodies to bury just two empty caskets. When it was finally over I tried my best to avoid more dry condolences.
I'm in my car ready to get as far as I can from the cemetery. I can't stop thinking about their final moments alive. Knowing them they probably died arguing. I get a text message from Keith telling me to meet him at our parents house. As I drove over rain started to pour and the sun began to set.
When I get there I notice a couple of different cars in the driveway. Relatives who attended the funeral earlier. I groan thinking of the people who would stop me just to cry in my face. Or tell me about the type of people they thought my parents were.
Immediately I dodged a small sea of people and went upstairs. I was looking for Keith who I thought would be here by now.
Walking down the hallway to my old bedroom I noticed Irina's door was slightly open.
For a moment I stood there debating on should I go in. This door is usually locked.
Turning the knob and walking in to what felt like a time machine. Irina's room was untouched and unchanged. As if any moment she could walk into her oasis. Her seventeen years of life all in preserved inside this one room.
I remember the day that she died. Gasping for air in the garden. Alone yet not afraid.
She just wanted to spend some time outside. It was such a beautiful fucking day. The news called it the best day of spring. We overheard it over breakfast.
My mom immediately told her no. That she should just open her bedroom window and rest. But the day was calling Irina's name and fresh air was not all that she wanted out of life. Her cancer had wore her to point of needing an oxygen tank. Which she referred to as a ball with the thinnest chain.
My dad Keith and I had just gotten home from a dodgers game. We found her
Laying on her back just beneath the lilies. In her favorite pale yellow dress as she wore the softest smile on her face. The oxygen tank far from her still on the patio. It fell to ground just barely touching grass. As if it could have ran after her; as if she wanted to.
In her left hand there was a small note that read
"I'll love you all Always&forever. Please Forgive me until when we meet again." In her right hand the was smallest lily she could pluck.
The sound of arguing brought me back to reality. As I heard what sounds like Keith and Ali. Leaving Irina's room I noticed her diary on her nightstand. I grabbed it and locked the door behind me. Following the sounds of their yelling I can tell they're in my dad's office.
"Are you fucking kidding me right now Keith?! I told you that this shit would happen." Ali screams.
"Can you just lower your damn voice? There are still people down stairs." Keith return.
"No no no you promised me you'd fix this shit! You said that you were going help me make sure that bitch pays for what she's done." Ali sobbing turned into rage. I walked closer to the door to her them better.
"Here just relax." Keith said to her.
I could hear the sounds of chopping following both of them snorting loudly. Rolling my eyes I was about to walk in until I heard Ali.
"I want their heads on a plater! Look at all this she's caused. Keith if it weren't for her your parents would still be here. It's her fault they're dead." She said trying to convince Keith.
The room goes quiet for a moment. I heard cries come from Keith "you're right they would be here." He said slowly starting to agree with her. "Eli has been looking day and night. I think her finally got her location. Ali promise you you'll get your revenge. We all will." He said.
