Already Gone

Katherine watched as her father angrily searched her room for bottles of alcohol. She was only nineteen, but by the age of sixteen she was already an alcoholic and failed to live without it. The result was not because of her father, but because of the male she was seeing named Ralph.

Ralph continued to encourage her alcoholism by providing her with various liquors and other drugs to relieve the stress she was suffering, which he produced. He cheated on her, beat her, threatened her life, but she still stayed. He knew what he was doing, but little did he know that Katherine's father also knew.

After her father found out that she too was following the dark path he was once on before, he put a stop to it. It was challenging for Katherine to remain sober, but she tried her best, yet it was never enough to keep her away from it. This was now the fourth time she had relapsed.

She remained in the doorway of her room, tears spilling down her face as he stumbled upon a bottle under the bed that was filled with vodka given to her by Ralph. He opened it and brought it to his nose, inhaling the alcohol. He shook his head and covered it back up before approaching her.

"Oh dios mio, hija! I tried Katherine, you've been sober for three months and now look! I can't stand seeing you like this, you have an entire life ahead of you and I won't let you throw it away like I did." Her father exploded, stomping to the living room to sit on the couch.

Katherine was right there, trailing behind him. "I'm sorry dad, I've been stressed! Please, I'm trying." She begged, trying to convince her father not to put her into rehab.

That was the arrangement that was formed the last time she relapsed. If she was to relapse again for the fourth time, he would bring her into rehab. Her dad could only do so much, and at this point he felt as if he was failing as a father.

"You need to go Katherine, I can't let you do this to yourself any longer." He exhaled, shaking his head at her.

"I'm going to change, I promise, por favor papá." Katherine sobbed. She refused to go into rehab surrounded by people who were just like her, that's not what she needed. If she wanted to heal, she would do it in the comfortability of her own home.

"Go to your room hija, I'm going to make some calls." He instructed her, stepping away. She was defeated, and she knew it, this was her fault. Katherine wiped her tears and sniffled before getting up and walking to her room. She sprawled out on her bed, hugging her pillow close to her as she continued to sob.

She heard her dad from the other side of the house talking to someone on the phone. She grimaced at the thought of being taken away. Katherine picked up her phone and opened up her messages with Ralph. Their relationship was complicated, but they weren't even dating. She despised him, but she believed that he was the only man who was going to love her, so she kept him close.

Her father also hated Ralph, and it took a lot for him not to beat the hell out of him for causing his daughter this much pain. He knew better than to beat up the seventeen-year-old at the time, but now that he was twenty he was debating if he should.

Katherine's fingers quickly wrote out a bitter message to Ralph giving it to him.

"I'm being sent away because of your dumbass. I hate you for what you did to me and everything that you have caused, don't text, call, or speak to me ever again." She sent the text before shutting off her phone and weeping into the pillow again.

Her dad slowly opened her door and groaned, seeing her in pain. He settled next to her and pulled her close.

"You're going with your sisters for a while hija." He spoke causing her to draw away and stare up in confusion.

"I tried everything and I don't know what more I can do. Maybe your sisters can help you. Being on the road should distract you from it all and that scum Ralph." He added.

"You spoke to Nicole and Brianna?" Katherine asked, sitting up straight, and her father nodded.

"They miss you Katherine, I know you're not too close with them but they're making an effort to see you." He pointed out.

Katherine and the twins were years apart in age, but that wasn't the reason for their unstable relationship. After their parents separated, Katherine made the decision to move to Mexicali with her father rather than remaining in Arizona with her mother and three other siblings.

"I know dad, I'm going to try my best with them." She responded by laying her head on her dad's shoulder. They remained in silence, not knowing what to say before she broke it.

"I'm sorry dad, I know I say it every time but I mean it. It's just complicated." She expressed, picking up her head from his shoulder to lay back in her bed.

"I know hija, you'll get through this, I promise." He told her, kissing her forehead and pulling her into a tight hug.

They pulled away after a few seconds, and he looked around her room before getting up.

"You should start packing Katherine, your flight is in two days." Her dad said, leaving her room and shutting the door.

Katherine walked up to her mirror and took a good look at herself. Her eyes were puffy and red while her cheeks were rosy. She gave herself a slight smile.

"You're going to get through this." She repeated to herself before turning away to pack all her necessities.

Katherine looked through her closet, picking out various pieces of clothing to stuff into her suitcase. She only had traveled with her sisters once, back when she was fifteen, but it had been years.

She didn't have any harsh feeling towards her other side of the family, but it was tough for her to talk to them about anything without her addiction being brought up in the conversation. She realized it was only because they were worried, but she didn't have the energy to talk about it without breaking down.

She loved her family, and she was always thankful for them, but it was challenging for her to express that without feeling guilty for not spending enough time with them. She had missed Brianna's wedding because she couldn't bare to show her face after she relapsed for the first time, but Brianna was never angry at her; it was all subjective feelings that Katherine felt.

Katherine zipped up her suitcase, finishing up packing all of her belongings that she would need for the few weeks she was going to travel with her sisters. She knew that the twins would take her along shopping, so she didn't bring too much. She moved on to packing her carry on backpack, which would hold her computer and other things she would need throughout the flight.

As she opened her drawers to retrieve her wallet, a photo of her and Ralph fell out of it. It was from their senior prom. She vividly recalled that night because he had tried to pressure her into going to the after party to get high and drunk. When she rejected, he slapped her hard across her face leaving a handprint.

She came home that night to her father waiting on the couch; he saw the handprint but before he could react she was already explaining the situation and telling him she handled it. Not only was Ralph verbally abusive, but he was physically abusive. He put his hands on Katherine multiple times and she fought back every single time, trying her best to defend herself.

She cursed under her breath, looking back all the stupid fights they had and why she continued to stay. She shook the memories and continued along with what she was doing. After what felt like hours but was minutes, she had completed packing everything up. She sat and at the foot of her bed, glancing around. Although she was still here it felt as if she was already gone.

"Goodbye Mexicali." She murmured, closing her eyes.
