"Lilly? Lilly, wake up honey."
My mother's voice woke me up, again in the hospital. What happened to me? Why am I so week and tired?
"Uhg...Mom? What happened? Why does my head hurt?"
"Well, umm..." Mom stuttered, choking back tears.
"Mom, please. Tell me what happened."
She took a deep breath. "Your leukemia is acting up, and the doctors don't know what to do."
I began crying. Why is this happening? I'm supposed to get married, have a baby, and live the rest of my life happily. Josh took my hand. He had been crying, too. He took a minute to calm down.
"It's going to be okay. We can get through this. How about we talk about something else. When should we do the wedding?"
"Well," I replied," it's October, so we could do the wedding in July. How about we do it on the Fourth of July, so we always remember."
We both agreed on the fifth of July. I told my parents to let Anna know, and just as I told them, Anna walked into my hospital room.
"What is it with you and hospitals?"she said, trying to cheer me up.
"I don't know. It could be the cold, drafty rooms. Or the gross cafeteria food. Maybe the sick people here and the sense of sadness in the air?" I replied, giggling.
"How are you guys doing?"
"Oh, the baby's fine."
Then I realized I hadn't told her yet. Josh and I looked at her, then smiled shyly.
"Yeah."I said quietly.
"When did you find out?"
"How long have I been here?"
"About two days ago."
Anna stayed for another hour or so, then she left.
Almost a month later, I was released from the hospital. I had medication, but life was almost back to normal. Except for the baby. It was growing just as you'd expect. The baby was perfectly healthy. Oops. I meant how you wouldn't expect.
Four months later, we checked on our baby. Our little one was a girl! As soon as we found out, I of course had to start vomiting on the equipment.
"It's okay, that's normal with female babies." The doctor said.
Josh and I went back to our apartment to figure out the baby's name. I was stuck between Jessica and Elizabeth, and he was stuck between Allyson and Katie.
"How about we name her at her birth?" Josh suggested.
I agreed. We should name her in the moment. We then worked on our wedding. When Josh wasn't working, we were planning baby stuff or wedding stuff. All we had to do for our wedding was figure out clothes and where to have it. I knew which dress I wanted, but we didn't know the colors of the bridesmaids dresses.
Suddenly, my phone rang. It was my mom.
"Hey mom, what's up?"
"Sweetheart, sit down."
"I am. Mom, what happened?"
"Honey, Anna died in a car accident today. I don't know what happened, her car was found totaled, and she had already died."
I couldn't believe it. The next thing I knew, I was curled up on the floor, crying. Josh came over, didn't ask what happened, and just cradled me in his lap.
