"Get up," Kimberly said in a firm voice. I heard the rustling of my blinds, then felt a ray of bright light across my face.
I groaned and covered my head with a pillow. I didn't want to get out of bed. I was perfectly content lying in bed for the rest of my life.
Kimberly wasn't convinced. She climbed onto my bed and straddled my body.
"I said get up you lazy bum!” Kimberly yelled in my ear. She pulled the pillow out of my grasp and threw it across the room.
"Fuck off" I moaned, trying to turn away from her.
"You've spent weeks lying in bed. And I'm not letting you spend one more day sitting on your butt! Get up!" She said sternly.
I slowly opened my eyes and sat up. She was right. I'd been in my bed for well over a month. My room was a mess and I hadn't even combed through my hair in weeks. I didn't particularly want to go out, but Kimberly’s tone told me there wasn't any other option.
I stood up and hobbled over to my dresser. My leg was still in a boot from the fracture. It was a pain in the ass to maneuver anywhere and I couldn't wait for it to be removed.
I grabbed a clean grey shirt and pulled it on over my torso. I winced slightly, as the scar running down my chest was still delicate to touch. I pulled on a pair of jeans, hid my matted curls under a navy beanie, and slipped on one of my red TOMs.
I turned to Kimberly and scowled. "Now that I'm up, where are you taking me?"
"I told Liam we'd meet him, Louis, and Niall for breakfast" Kimberly replied as she walked down the stairs.
I limped after her. "Niall? Why did you invite him?" I whined. It's not that I didn't like Niall, we just weren't very good friends. I'd only hung out with him a couple times, and we had yet to bond.
"He's a nice guy! Don't be mean! Plus he’s cute" Kimberly remarked. She continued walking down the sidewalk and I struggled to keep up. It was a little over 6 blocks to the diner, but Kimberly insisted on walking so I could get some exercise. We walked the entire way making small talk, but most of my concentration went towards moving my heavy boot.
My mind was cluttered with thoughts of Harry. Being out in the world again was strange, and it made me wish that he could be with me. I was seeing him less frequently than when I was in the hospital. Occasionally, I'd see him standing at my bedside or sitting on my dresser, but those were only quick hallucinations. By the time I uttered a greeting, he would disappear.
He wasn't in my dreams anymore either, which was the worst part. In my dreams, we would talk and laugh and kiss. I would talk to him about anything, and we formed an instant bond. Without Harry there to talk to, I felt alone and upset. Harry was just a side effect of a variety of medications. He was something my own mind created. He didn’t exist, and I needed to accept that.
My mind stopped wandering when we finally reached the diner. I walked in and saw Niall frantically waving at us from a booth in the corner. I rolled my eyes but Kimberly pushed me towards the blonde haired boy.
"How ya feelin?" Niall asked.
"Alright" I mumbled. I picked up a menu and stared at it intensely. I wasn't in the mood for conversation, and the walk had exhausted me.
Thankfully, Liam and Niall carried most of the conversation. Kimberly was too busy flirting with Niall to acknowledge my silence. Louis was cranky in the mornings, so he sat next to me and quietly sipped a cup of coffee.
I practically dozed off until a familiar voice shook me awake. My heart immediately started racing. Was I really having another hallucination here, in the middle of a crowded restaurant?
The tall boy with curly hair walked over to our table and smiled. I returned a weak smile. I didn't want to look crazy in front of Liam, Louis and Niall, but all I wanted to do was kiss the boy who I had been missing for weeks.
There was something different about this hallucination though, as Harry wasn't focusing on me. Instead, he turned to Niall and...gave him a high five??
My mind was spinning. I didn't understand what was happening. Niall was talking to Harry. Niall could see Harry. Harry wasn't just in my mind.
"This is my mate Harry! We go way back!" Niall introduced us. "And this is Liam and Louis. They go to school with me. And this is Liam’s step-sister, Kimberly, and her friend, Jess. They’re American.”
Harry grinned. "Nice to meet you," he said in his low raspy voice. "Can I get you anything?" he asked as he pulled a notepad out of the apron hanging loosely around his waste.
Liam ordered, followed by Kimberly, Louis and then Niall ordered enough to feed a small army. Finally, Harry turned to me. My heart stopped. He was a real person. Those bright green eyes, that curly brown hair, those soft pink lips. They were real. And they were impatiently waiting for my order.
"Scrambled eggs. And tea please" I stuttered. Kimberly raised an eyebrow at me as Harry walked back towards the kitchen.
"You alright, girl?" She asked.
I swallowed a lump in my throat and forced a weak smile. "Just fine."
