Chapter one
"What do you want to do when you're older Tris?" Adam asked his best friend as he gazed up the the hazy white clouds. They were lying next to each other on a patch of dasies in the Field of Dreams, just like every other Wednesday in sumer. It was just an ordinary empty field, but they called it the Field of Dreams because they'd played there when they were little and lived out their dreams of being wizards and fairies, and knights in shining armour. Now they just went there to laze away warm afternoons, and soak up the sun and each others company.
"I've told you before! I want to be docto-"
"Not your job! I mean what do you want to do in your life. How do you want to spend your summers in the future?"
"Oh." There was a long pause.
Tris finally turned to look at Adam. "I want to travel and see the world. I want to go to exotic places and meet exotic people and try exotic things." She smiled blissfully and stared up at the drifting clouds, lost in her thoughts of cities and beaches and grand monuments.
Suddenly, she snapped out of her trance. "Well?" she demanded.
"Well what?"
"Well what about you? What's your dream?"
"I want to get out of this town for starters. There's nothing for me here. Just a care home full of idiots and social workers that just want to tick a box. You're the only reason i stay sane. No, I'm out of here. I want to make a new life for myself somewhere. Then I want to get married and raise a family. I want to be a proper dad- the kind that drops his kids off at school and takes them to the zoo on Saturdays and is grinning on the front row at every school play! A proper dad."
"The kind you never had?" Tris quietly asked.
"Yeah..." he whispered hoarsely.
Each stayed silent, lost in their own thoughts, until Adam shot up.
"Get up."
"What?" she looked up at him, her face scrunched up in confusion.
"Get up." he repeated insistently.
She huffed but held out her hand and waited for him to pull her up. When she was on her feet she crossed her arms and asked again "What?"
"Listen."
What?" she stared at him like he had grown a second nose.
"No, I mean, really listen."
So she listened. The only sounds were the sweet twitter of birds and trees gently rustling in the summer breeze.
"I can't hear anything." She said after a minute had passed.
"Exactly! We could be in a different world!"His face exploded into a huge grin. "Fighting pirates in Arazore!" Tris giggled as he mimed swordfighting. "Horse racing in Ricter!" He galloped around her as he recounted another of the adventures that they'd dreamed up in that field years ago. "And..." He span to face her and grabbed her tanned hands. "...Dancing with Kings and Queens in Lextin!" They leapt around the field giggling and laughing.
Tris smiled to herself. Adam always made everything more fun. That's why she loved him. Oh, not like that! Tris chuckled. Everyone always thought her and Adam should date, because of how well they got on, but it wasn't like that. They tried dating once, but after a few days they'd both agreed that it as far too weird. So they stayed as best friends.
"You are a most delightful dancer, my lady!" Adam bowed.
"You're not so bad yourself, my lord!" They came to a dizzy stop. "Lextin was definately my favourite world!"
"AAAARRGHH!" Tris whirled around and saw a huge man drssed all in black holding Adam arund the waist and throat.
"Get off him!" She shouted and rushed at the man, pummelling his arms and legs to no avail. Gasping, she felt a sharp pain in the back of her neck and the world went black.
