Chapter 8

Effie still has no idea about my pregnancy. I didn't want to tell her but Peeta says we have to.

She's blabbering on about how the orange works so well with the chicken we are eating. "I've been taking cookery classes, you know. This is tremendous!" Effie says.

Of course I can't tell Effie that I'm pregnant on the train because I am ninety-nine percent sure that the whole train is bugged with cameras. That way Snow will definitely find out that I am pregnant.

We are interrupted by one of the train attendants. "There is a problem with the train so there will be a delay of one hour. We are very sorry for the inconvenience." With that he walks back through the double doors.

Of course in Effies world this is what you would call a 'disaster'.

"Our schedule! It's all messed up! What an earth are we going to do?" She says, pacing up and down the food cart.

"Calm down, woman! We have much bigger problems to be worrying about." Haymitch scuffs.

Effie must understand what Haymitch is getting at and looks towards Peeta and I apologetically.

I realise that this is the perfect opportunity to tell Effie about my pregnancy. I get up from my chair and take a hold of her arm which is covered in brightly coloured feathers. "I need to talk to you."

She seems a little taken aback by me basically dragging her off the train but doesn't stop me. When I decide we are far enough from the train, I stop and turn towards Effie.

"I have something to tell you. I couldn't tell you on the train because Snow can't find out. Only, myself, Peeta, Haymitch, my mother and Prim know so you have to promise me that

you won't say anything."

I feel like a little girl in the the playground, making her friend promise not to tell anyone that she drew a flower on one of the school desks.

"I won't tell anyone, Katniss. You're starting to scare me now, what is it?" Effie says.

I look down at my shoes and take a deep breath, "Effie, I'm pregnant."

The look on her face is almost funny. She quickly pulls me into a hug and I feel a few tears fall onto my shoulder. She pulls back and has tears streaming down her face.

"I want to feel happy for you, but-" She stars.

I nod. "I know."

"You deserved so much better, Katniss. Both of you did." She says softly. "I am truly sorry."

"Thank you, Effie."

We walk back to the train after Effie made me promise that her make-up looked fine.

"I told her." I tell Peeta as I join him laying on our bed.

"How did she take it?" He asks, wrapping his arms around me.

"I think she's okay. She was quite upset though." I tell him.

He pauses before saying, "She really does care about us, you know."

I nod. "I know."

She does. I know she does. No matter how shaped she is by the Capitol, she does have a heart. Effie is not happy. Nobody is, not even the Capitol citizens. Effie's outfits always keep her up straight and on her toes. She can never relax, she is never at peace. Nobody is.
