Working at the BAU can be hard. Allowing yourself to love can be harder. Allowing yourself to fall in love with Doctor Spencer Reid? The task seems impossible.
Love has never been your thing. Sure, you've always wanted someone who was there for you...
"Y/N....Y/N..Y/N!" Your eyes slowly fluttered open, gals to have the sight of Spencer being the first thing you see when you wake up.
"You gotta stop falling asleep on all the plane rides." He mumbles, handing you a case file detailing the briefing. You were currently on your way to New York, another serial killer on the loose. This one was more violent compared to the recent cases. And perhaps the scariest thing, he targeted the exact officers and FBI agents who were trying to find him.
"Cmon, everyone. We don't have a lot of time." Hotch ushered the team off the plane. Within the next hour, you were in a new office, sitting in a circle listening to the case deductions. JJ spoke to the press crowded around the entrance while the rest of you analyzed tactic.
"How many agents have been killed?" You asked, not being to hold back your sheer curiosity. Hotch grimaced and you were about to take back your question, but he answered too quickly. "Four... that's why it'll mostly be our team on the case. Most agents here don't feel safe coming into work. But, a fresh team will be good. The Unsub won't be used to how we work, which will make it harder for him to find victims." Hotch rambled, clearly reaching to lengths to find ways to make the team more comfortable. You glanced around the table. Everyone was tense. You were most worried for Hotch right now. Your mind instantly going to the darkest of places. You had profiled him before, though technically it was breaking unofficial team rules, it was obvious he was having troubles at home, this case wouldn't do him any good. And it wouldn't be right for him to leave his kid alone, if something were to happen.
The rest of the team matched your distressed levels. Morgan's eyebrows were pinched in concern, Emily was squeezing a stress ball under the table, so hard you thought it may pop any second and Spencer was biting his lip, his jaw clenched. You were silently grateful that Garcia had chosen to work this case from the home office.
For the next few days, everything was going pretty smoothly. All of you were stationed in a nice hotel, sharing rooms in pairs on the off chance something went wrong. Penelope was close to tracking all of his movements and it was relatively easy to understand how the Unsub worked. The only problem would be catching him.
Spencer was had been a huge help. More than usual even, that is. He'd gone ahead and made a list of all the probabilities of the outcomes of catching the Unsub: how he would react, what the best approach was, etc. He was damn good at his job and you felt so proud to be working with him. But, you could tell how stressed he was.
"Spence? Can we talk?" You asked softly, pulling him away from the rest of the team, behind one of the big white boards.
He rolled up the sleeves of his button down, avoiding your eyes. When he finished, he unrolled them and started all over again. You reached up, stopping his movements and lifting his chin. "Hey..look at me."
He finally did and you noticed the how bad the bags were under his eyes. Ever since you and Spencer became whatever the hell you and Spencer were, your nightmares became rare and you got a somewhat better sleep schedule. From the looks of it, Spencer hadn't been so lucky. "When's the last time you slept?"
"Uhh" Spencer hesitated, trying to remember. "Spence, why didnt you say something? I could've helped- I could've tried-"
"It's alright." He cut you off. "Just stress, is all." You let out a frustrated sigh. He was always dismissing his problems, always putting others first. "Stress about the team?"
"And you." He mumbles, running his tongue over his bottom lip.

"Me?" You ask, brows pinching.
Spencer reaches down, lacing his fingers with yours. It was the most physical contact you've had in awhile and you melted into his touch. "I don't want you to get hurt." He admits, studying the floor.
"Me neither. Not again." You replied, squeezing his hand tighter. "But I don't plan on leaving you anytime soon, alright doc?" You forced a playful tone, anything to make him feel better. He gifted you with a smile, planting a quick kiss on your cheek. "Alright."
"Everyone in the briefing room now!" Hotchs voice boomed through the room. Shit. That didn't sound good.
You followed the rest of the team, instinctively holding Reid's hand all the way there. You hadn't even noticed. Not until Morgan turned around in the doorway, blocking your path. His eyes traveled from you, to Spencer, then down to your intertwined hands, a soft smirk playing on his lips.
You cleared your throat, immediately dropping Spencer's hand but, once you sat down, you made sure to grab it once more, holding it under the table, out of view. Every now and then he'd squeeze his fingers around yours. It was a small gesture but his way of thanking you. Just for caring. Just for being you.
"There's been another victim. One of the New York agents who went home early a few days ago. They found the body this morning." Hotch explained and your stomach sank. "The good news is, Garcia was successfully hacking his phone and thanks to Reid's suggestion, we tried out the tactic of talking him into meeting with one of us."
The team erupted in murmurs: some volunteering, others wondering who'd be willing to do something so dangerous. But, Hotch interrupted the chatter.
"He wants to meet Spencer."
(A/N): Ughhhhh I'm so annoyed. I was going to have this chapter up hours ago but then I saw the stuff about Wattpad being hacked and I spent an hour making sure my email and passwords were safe Anyways, sorry if this was rushed, I have exciting angst I want to get to.
