Chapter Six

Ever since we started talking, Marcus and I were spending a lot of time together. After a while of silently hanging out, he started to open up a bit. He admitted to me that he had trust issues, but only with certain people. We also started to get to know each other a bit. It was amazing on how much we had in common. We got along so well that I thought it was meant to be that we spoke and became friends. It was around that time that my feelings got stronger for him.

We were in art class, painting with watercolor when the fire alarm went off. "Mrs. Gomez, was there a fire drill planned today?" asked Juliana, who was covering her ears. "No. This was not planned. Everybody, take your time leaving the classroom and stay off the sidewalks." she explained, ushering people out the door. People started groaning as they were leaving the room. It was minus temperatures today and it was snowing outside. None of us had our jackets or sweaters, except for Marcus.

"What do you think is going on?" he asked, coming up beside me. "I bet you that some kid pulled a prank," I replied. Out of all the days this could have happened, they had to choose today. "Everybody is going to be freezing," I said, bracing myself for the cold. As soon as I stepped outside, cold winds whipped my hair around my face. My face and nose were already turning red from the cold. It wasn't long after that I began to shiver. I stood near Marcus for the prank. He seemed to be watching the school and me.

"How are you feeling?" he asked, looking me up and down. "I am freezing! I should have brought my sweater to class." I replied. Then, he zipped down his sweater and opened his arms. "Come here," he said. I walked closer to him, and he pulled me into his sweater, wrapping his arms around me. "Any better?" he asked, looking at me. "Yeah, a little better," I replied, my cheeks burning. It felt like my heart was going to explode from my chest. I hope he couldn't feel my heart pounding from my chest. He smiled at me and pulled me closer to him.

Finally, after fifteen minutes, the teachers allowed us to go back in and get our stuff. Sadly, I pulled out of Marcus's embrace and went back inside to my seat. My heart started to calm down, but my head was still spinning. The smell of his cologne was intoxicating, in a good way. That was the closest that Marcus and I have ever been. The way he held me in his arms made me feel completely safe. It was like I was protected by the one person who could possibly feel the same way for me as I do for him.

Every few minutes or so, I would turn my head back to look at Marcus. He would always be looking at me, his cheeks flushed. Was he thinking about what happened outside as well? It was amazing on how one person could change your life forever. One touch. One feel. Even one sight. You could just tell that the one person would be able to change you. For example, Joel had changed me. He had changed me to become a stronger person. I had a feeling that Marcus would change me, in a good way.

The final bell of the day rang, and I couldn't be happier. I shoved all of my books into my school bag and walked out of the classroom. When I was walking towards my locker, Joel got in my way. "What do you want?" I asked, adding hatred in my voice. My voice sounded like there was pure venom in it, poisoned enough to kill someone. "Why are you hanging out with that Marcus guy?" he asked. "It's none of your concern," I said, walking away. He grabbed my wrist, tight. "Joel, you're hurting me." I whimpered, his grasp getting tighter. "Then, answer me. Why are you hanging out with him?" he asked, spit flying from his mouth. "Joel, let go of me!" I yelled. Then, out of nowhere, Marcus came by. "Let her go!" he yelled, running towards Joel. "We were just having a talk, weren't we?" he asked, looking at me. Before I could even say something, Marcus's fist connected to Joel's mouth. I was pushed out of the way, while the two fought.

"Break it up, you two!" shouted the principal, Mr. Brennigan. After Mr. Brennigan, Mrs. Gomez came running towards me. "Are you alright, Breanna?" she asked. I nodded my head but showed her my wrist. "Mr. Brennigan, take those two to the office and let them tell their story. Bring Breanna in last and she'll confirm which one was true," she said, helping me up. Before the boys were taken to the office, I could see the concern in Marcus's eyes when he looked at her.

"Is your wrist going to be okay, dear?" she asked concerned. "I'll be okay. I don't know why he did that." I said, after explaining to her what happened. "Joel seems to be a troubled kid, but I'm nervous that Joel will get away with this incident, as usual," she replied. Joel played hockey and football, so it would only be fair that Joel would get home free, while Marcus got another detention. "Let's go to the office and see how this goes," she said, smiling. I gave her a confident smile. I knew how I was going to let this one play out.

I walked into the office with Mrs. Gomez. Marcus was on my right and Joel was on my left. Mr. Brennigan was giving them both stern looks until I walked in. He had a big smile on his face when I came him. "Hello, Breanna. So, the boys told me their story. Joel has said that he was trying to stop Marcus from hurting his best friend, while Marcus said that Joel had grabbed your wrist and you were yelling at him to let go." he explained. Joel looked at Marcus and me with a smirk. He knew that no matter which story I said was true, he would get out of it easily. "Mr. Brennigan, I think it would be a good idea to get Coach Maclean in here. One of his star players is in here and I think he deserves to know." I said, smiling. The smirk was instantly removed from his face. No one ever included the coach in these decisions. Mrs. Gomez looked down at me, beaming with a bright smile. "That's a lovely idea, Breanna," she said. Mr. Brennigan smiled and called the coach into the office. Within seconds, he was in the office.

"What is going on?" he asked, looking at Joel. "It seems like Joel has gotten into some trouble again, Jonathan. We are still waiting from Breanna what the true story is," he explained to Coach. Mr. Brennigan explained to him what had happened in the hallway. It took him a few minutes to let the new information and then looked at me. "So, who's story is true, Breanna?" he asked, looking at my wrist. "Marcus's story is true, sir. Joel unexpectedly grabbed my wrist while I was trying to go to my locker. In order for Joel to let go of me, he had to punch Joel." I explained, truthfully. "Well, that's done. Marcus will get a detention, but Joel, you will get a week suspension. We do not tolerate this. Now, off you go to pack your things." he said. "This is complete bullshit!" he yelled, punching the desk. "Breanna is speaking the truth. Marcus is nothing, but a sweet boy. He obviously cares for Breanna's safety. This was defense." explained Mrs. Gomez. Joel looked at me, pure fury in his eyes. "One day, you will pay for this," he said, as he walked away from the office. "Breanna, we will make sure Joel stays out of your way. We'll have Mrs. Gomez walk you to your classes," said Mr. Brennigan. "Can Marcus walk with me?" I asked, hopeful. "If he wishes to do so, then he can," he replied. After that, we walked out of the office and Mrs. Gomez went back to her class.

"Thanks for helping me," I said, looking at him. "He wasn't letting you go, so there had to be a way for him to let go," he replied. He looked down at my wrist and saw the bruises from Joel's hand. "I'll be okay. It just hurts." I explained. "I just hope that something like this never happens to you again," he replied. I could feel my heart fluttering away like a bird. "Can I ask you something?" he asked, looking at me. "You can ask me anything," I said, smiling. "Well, there's a new ice rink opening downtown and I was wondering if you wanted to go ice skating with me," he said, his eyes gleaming. Was he asking me out on a date or was it just a friendly gesture? Either way, my heart wanted me to say yes and that was my response. "Of course. It sounds like fun." I said. With that, we walked out of the school and went to our separate homes.
