I couldn't quite believe that it was my last year at Hogwarts, nor that I was turning 18 in two months' time. The last six years at Hogwarts seemed to pass me by so quickly, that I didn't even take the time to stop and appreciate how lucky I was to be there. That was going to change this year, I was going to slow down, and stop looking at the negative aspects of my life at Hogwarts, and truly appreciate the beauty of the castle, the grounds, the classes, and the security of my home away from home. Unfortunately, the universe had other plans for me. To add to the grief of losing Isabelle, and the stress of Saint Mungo's, Sirus Black had escaped from Azkaban and the chance of meeting a dementor had grown significantly. Especially given that Harry Potter was at Hogwarts, and dark wizards always seemed to rear their head when he is around. I felt bad for him, after all, he lost his parents at a younger age than I did, but he would have been used to it by the age of 6, whereas I was just getting started.

I had settled myself into a compartment on the Hogwarts Express, and I'd been stuck in a book for the last 20 minutes when the train had finally left the station. I had been a prefect since my 5th year and had been made head girl, but fortunately, Percy Weasley had insisted on patrolling the train himself. I always tried to get to the station early, as I didn't want to have to work my way through the crowds of parents wishing their kids goodbye. It hurt too much, listening to the hundreds of 'I love you's' & 'please write' requests. I would have given anything for one letter from my Mum and Dad, but I learnt the hard way, you don't appreciate what you have until its gone.

We were about 3 quarters of the way to Hogwarts when the train suddenly stopped on the bridge. The other students in my compartment started to panic, looking out of windows trying to figure out what had gone wrong. To be honest with you, I was just trying to lay low and not draw any attention to myself, but I was slightly concerned when after 5 minutes we hadn't started moving again. After another minute I remember hearing the other compartments around us go silent, and that's when the world started to feel like the colours had drained out of it. The world felt dark, and any shred of happiness that I had in me had disappeared. I can't even begin to describe the fear that struck through the compartment when the door slid open, and a dementor was staring back at us. I was the oldest of the group, the others only being third years, and I stood up and ushered for them to get behind me. This was the moment I was terrified of. I had always struggled with the Patronus Charm, but after the last summer, I had no chance. 'Expecto Patronum' I chanted firmly, but barely a wisp of white light came from my wand. I began to feel the life drain out of me, and as I grew more and more lightheaded, I saw a second dark figure behind the dementor. There were no words spoken, just a white light and then I hit the floor.

When I woke up, I remember the ringing in my ears, and the presence of 4 people hovering over me. 'Is she going to be okay' one of the kids said. 'She will be fine once she wakes up' came from an older voice. I opened my eyes and tried to sit up 'Be careful now, you'd had a fright,' I looked up and saw a dishevelled man in his early 30's staring back at me. He had kind hazel eyes, and some scars across his face, but he was still quite attractive 'Here, eat this chocolate, it will help' he said helping me to my seat, and handing me a square of chocolate. 'That was much worse than I expected, and my expectations were low' I said, taking a bite of the chocolate. He laughed 'Yes, they are rather horrible. How are you feeling now?' 'Better now I've had some chocolate.' I smiled. 'What the hell was that thing?' Asked one of the brunette boys. 'A dementor, one of the guards of Azkaban Prison. It was searching the train for Sirius Black.' The man said 'I'm going to have a word with the driver as that is now the second student it has attacked.' He got up and began to leave, when I jumped up and followed him out of the door.

'Are you our new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher?' I asked as we walked to the front of the train. 'Yes, I'm Professor R J Lupin' He smiled. 'With all due respect I hope you're better than our last two, because they have been shocking to say the least.' I laughed. 'I will certainly do my best Miss-' 'Barker Sir, Lizzy Barker' 'Well Miss Barker, I hope I live up to your expectations.' He joked 'Now I need to speak with the driver, but I look forward to seeing you in class.' 'Thank you for the chocolate, and for saving me Professor' I smiled, before turning and returning to the compartment to grab my clothes. We were almost at Hogsmeade station at that point, and I still needed to change into my robes. It was pouring it down outside, and I definitely didn't want to have to change one the carriages.

The welcoming feast was nothing special, we only had about 5 first years join Hufflepuff, and the only major announcement was that dementors would be posted at the entrances to the grounds. Honestly, I didn't really see the point, if he could get past them once why would this time be any different? Either way I set that thought aside and finished up my dinner before heading back to the dorms with the first years. I showed them the barrels and how to get into the dorms, before showing them the way to the bedrooms and heading to my own. I was absolutely exhausted and beyond ready for bed. I was asleep before my head had even hit the pillow.
