That next morning I woke up to heat on my shoulder and weight on my arm. It was such an unfamiliar feeling that my eyes snapped open and there in front of me was Rat. His tall figure loomed over me as he lay next to me in my bed. His head rested on my shoulder and I don't know how but he had one arm resting under my neck. I quickly sat up and got out of bed but Rat did not even stir. The morning air was cool and crisp and I shivered at the absence of heat. I hadn't noticed how cold it was as Rat's body heat had been keeping me warm. I threw on my bathrobe and headed out the door where I was immediately greeted by Carl looking icy and cold.
"Where's Rat?" He asked me. I didn't have to answer because me immediately turned and saw him sleeping in my bed. "How'd he get in here? Did you let him in?"
"No. Rats are mammals so I guess he just got called sleeping on his own."
My excuse felt right to me but it did not seem to sit well with Carl who momentarily glared at me before pushing me gently aside to enter my room.
"Ill go wake him up." He said. "You go help Sheldon with breakfast."
"Sheldon is making breakfast?"
"He's trying." Carl said and suddenly there was a crash from the kitchen and I ran to see what had happened. There in the kitchen was Sheldon standing on a chair trying to reach the animal feed we kept at the top shelf. He had knocked over a pile of plastic plates from the shelf below but he had managed to reach the bug jellies and he was munching on them with his hand still in the bag.
"Dont eat those!" I yelled at him and he became startled, turned around, and fell face first off the chair. I tried to catch him but he was heavier that I thought and we both fell to the floor. I opened my eyes and we were nose to nose. His breath smelt like bugs but his orange eyes were hypnotic.
"You scared me." He whispered as he kind of shrunk into his scarf. I pushed him off me and stood up as I began picking up the plastic plates from the ground. Carl came in with Rat and looked around at the mess.
"What happened here?" He asked Sheldon. "And why is your face so red?"
I turned to look at Sheldon and sure enough his face was bright red with the freckles on his face looking like the spots on a ladybugs shell.
"I did something bad." He whispered as he pulled his scarf further up over his face. Just then my dad came in. He looked around at the mess we had made and chuckled to himself.
"So active in the morning." He muttered as he stepped over scattered plates and grabbed his work bag.
"Are you going in today?" I asked him.
"Only for a few hours." He said as he headed for the door. I waved him goodbye and he was quickly gone out the door. I then turned to the guys.
"This place is a mess." I muttered. "Do you guys want to go out get something to eat?"
"O-outside?" Sheldon shuddered at the thought.
"Theres nothing to be afraid of." I assured him but he didn't seem convinced. I directed the two other guys to grab some coats from the closet while I sat on the floor with Sheldon. "I don't want to leave you here alone." I told him.
"Then don't." He said.
"You need to go outside eventually.'
"But I don't like it. Everything is so big and different."
"Different?" Did he mean size different or did thing actually look different to him from a human point of view. Slowly I pulled the scarf down so I could see his eyes and he was slightly teary. "You'll be fine. Please come with us."
He paused and slowly raised his head. "On one condition." He said.
"What is it?"
He reached out and grabbed my hand. "You never let go of me."
I looked at him and he was dead serious. I could see a slight quiver in his shoulder and his eyes were wet.
"ok." I muttered and he smiled as we both stood up. Carl and Rat came in wearing sweaters and I quickly left to get dressed before motioning all three boys out of the house. After I locked the door behind me Sheldon grasped my hand and I started walking with him towards the shopping center. This immediately caught the attention of the two other guys.
"What are you doing?" Carl asked, a slight scowl on his face.
"Im taking you guys to the shopping center."
"Thats not what I mean. Why are you holding hands?"
"She promised." Sheldon whimpered as he gripped my hand tighter as if scared Carl would tear us apart and judging from his expression he just might try.
"He's scared." I told Carl.
"But that's not fair!"
"What are you, a kid? Why are you talking about being fair?"
Carl frowned but he didn't tried to argue further as he walked further ahead.
"Can I hold your other hand?" Rat asked and I jumped at the sound of his voice behind me. Carl turned back and glared at the taller male but Rat seemed completely unfazed. "Please?" He asked.
"Are you scared too?" I asked him and he didn't say anything so slowly I took his other hand. His fingers were long and slender and his palm was warm. I felt a bit awkward with both my hands being held by these grown guys but I found I had a small bit of pity for them that made it hard for me to say no. I looked forward and Carl turned and wouldn't look at me. On one hand I felt bad for upsetting him but on the other hand I only have two hands.
