The young woman speed walked down the bustling streets of New York, looking around at the immense buildings, trying to figure out which skyscraper was the one she needed.
"Oh, come on, they all look exactly the same!" she thought, becoming more and more panicked by the minute.
She had a very poignant business meeting to attend to and if she was late, there was no way the publishing company would even consider her book. She would have used a GPS app on her phone, but today just had to be the day that her charger broke without her knowledge, leaving it completely dead and unusable. Well, at least until she found a working charger, but that didn't seem like it would happen for quite a while.
"I guess I'll just have to ask for directions," she thought as she glanced around her for someone who looked trustworthy.
She didn't want to ask someone who would give her faulty directions or try to kidnap her. Suddenly her eyes landed on a woman, who wore a clean business suit and had an innocuous aura about her. She walked up to the business woman, hoping that she wasn't mistaken about her aura.
"Umm, hi, I was wondering if you could maybe give me some directions. I'm trying to get to the Harper Publishing Company." She asked, looking at the woman, who just smiled and nodded.
"Of course! I'm actually headed there now, so we can walk together, if you'd like." She responded, "Oh, I'm Allyson by the way."
"It's a pleasure to meet you Allyson, I'm Rebecca. Thank you so much for helping me."
The two women walked down the street, making their way to the publishing company. Allyson didn't seem to be very garrulous, but Rebecca didn't mind, since people who were insanely talkative tended to annoy her. Eventually they arrived at the building that housed Harper Publishing Company. It was an immensely tall skyscraper with what looked to be millions of glass windows and one of those fancy revolving doors, which the two ladies walked through.
"Just head over to the receptionist and she'll tell you exactly where you need to go." Allyson explained, before heading off to the elevator.
Rebecca nodded, making her way over to the secretary, who only gave her a bored look and a small, blithe smile. She looked down upon Rebbeca, as if she wasn't worth her time.
"What do you want?" the receptionist asked, annoyance evident in her voice.
Rebecca took a deep breath, trying to calm her nerves. She hated being talked down to and this lady was really pushing her buttons. Rebecca met the woman's gaze and said, "I'm looking for the office of Mrs. Harper, could you direct me to what floor she's on."
The secretary scoffed, "Just another wannabe author, I see. Well, good luck with your meeting, I doubt the boss will take a story from someone so insignificant as you. She only likes big name stories, but if you still want to try she's on the top floor."
The scowl on Rebecca's face became more intense as she whirled around and walked quickly toward the elevator. She stepped into the elevator and the awful receptionist called out to her in a mocking tone, "Have fun, Honey."
Before she could respond, the elevator doors shut and it began lifting her to the top floor. Rebecca seethed the entire way up, thinking about the rancorous attitude that she would feel toward the sorry excuse for a secretary.
Suddenly the elevator stopped and she stepped out into a fairly large waiting room that led to a large mahogany door, which presumably led to Mrs. Harper's office. Just as Rebecca sat down, a woman walked out of the office, a crestfallen look upon her face. She walked right into the elevator without a glance back. Rebecca figured her book must have been rejected and a wave of nervousness crashed over her.
