Chapter 8- The Children of Water

It was a normal day at Gerads School of Learning. They had extra long study periods and no snack breaks; generally it was an average day. In the last period before summer break all of the kids were waiting for the desperate joy that summer break would bring; None more then Ronny Oleeva.

Ronny was a young guy, ready to be done with sixth grade. He had thick brown hair, hazel eyes, and light skin. Ronny was always moving. Whether it was tapping along to a particular tune or building intricate paper airplanes that always hit their target. This afternoon he was particularly anxious and wouldn't stay still.

"Five minutes!" Whispered Ayers beaming to Ronny as he turned around to whisper. Ronny smiled back. He was just as excited. Ayers was one of Ronny's closest friends. Ronny, like almost all of the other students were not paying attention to their history teacher Mrs. Delores. Their eyes were on the clock behind her.

Then the door to the class room door opened and in the door way was the TA or teacher assistant Wood. He was a tall guy with brownish Ginger hair and a face full of freckles. He wore a beanie that was uniform for him. Mrs. Delores addressed him and asked him what the matter was.

" I need Ronny Oleeva," Wood said, his expression was forced and antsy.

"Mr. Oleeva?" She said to Ronny. Ronny was already up and walking to the door. He flashed a bragging smile to Ayers who was looking indignant and envious of his four minute early release.

Soon Wood and Ronny were walking quickly towards the exit. Ronny watched Wood as he walked. All of the kids said that his gait was weird. They were right. It was almost as if he wasn't used to his own feet.

"Who checked me out early?" Ronny asked, "my mom?" Ronny's single mother worked all day, it was very unusual for him to get out early.

"Nope," Wood said shortly.

"Henry?" Ronny asked, his mother's fiancé. She had been single since his birth and Henry was her closest friend. They soon fell in love but never expressed it towards each other until Henry finally told her earlier that year. Ronny had never seen his mom so happy.

"No," Wood said. Ronny racked his brain, who else would have?

"Then who checked me out?" Ronny asked. Wood looked at him.

"I did, now we don't have time for a questions," Wood said, "they could be attack at any moment," he said looking around anxiously. Ronny was so confused.

"Who could attack?"

"The extraction team should be here any minute. . ." Wood said.

"Wait who is going to attack?" Ronny asked. They went out the front doors and were walking into the parking lot. They were almost running towards Wood's car. They were almost there when all hell broke loose.

The pavement exploded next to them. Dirt, cement, and the occasional car decided to take a trip skyward. Wood covered Ronny and ushered him with head down to a less open area. From the explosion a giant green, white, and black worm shot out. It had to have been twenty feet long and five feet thick around. It had black eyes and a matching beak in place of a maw. When the beak opened it let loose a ear piercing scream. It sounded like a mix between a child's scream of fear and nails on a chalkboard. Ronny knew little about giant worms threatening to kill him but he guessed that scream was a war cry.

"What is that?!?!!" Ronny screamed truly terrified.

"The monster we need to avoid," Wood said, "come on we have to get you to safety!" Wood grabbed his arm and pulled him while sprinting towards the trees on the other side of the parking lot. But they weren't fast enough.
