Phoenix's eyes flew open at the sound of Katniss screaming in pure agony. "Run! Run! The fog is poison!" She screams, clutching her now throbbing hand. The sudden panic in her voice sent a jolt of fear through Phoenix's chest. Without hesitation, the group scrambled to their feet and bolted away from the wall of fog that was creeping up on them.
Finnick sprinted towards Mags without wasting a second, crouching so she could climb onto his back. Katniss, Peeta, and Phoenix raced past the two, all desperately trying to escape the fog that was coming at them from all ends.
Phoenix looked behind her shoulder, cursing under her breath as she saw how quickly the fog was spreading. Her eyes stayed on Finnick and Mags, relieved to see them close behind, but unsure if it was enough to keep them safe from the poisonous wall gaining on them.
The alliance pushed through the jungle as fast as they could, dodging thick vines and weaving between trees. The fog began closing in on them from every side, forcing Finnick, Mags, and Phoenix to split off from Katniss and Peeta.
Now running slightly behind Finnick and Mags, a pit grew in Phoenix's stomach, realizing there was no way she could protect both groups at once. Panic started to rise as she desperately tried to catch a glimpse of Katniss and Peeta to make sure they were safe.
Stretching her neck to get a better view, she failed to notice the large rock that was hidden just beneath her feet. Her foot caught on the rock, and she fell forward, hitting the ground hard. Before Phoenix could do anything, the fog touched her skin, and all Phoenix could feel was pain.
Phoenix's screams matched Katniss's as both girls cried out in pure agony. The horrible burning sensation spread across Phoenix's skin, sharp and relentless, as she let out another desperate scream, trying to get back to her feet. "Please, Phoenix!" Finnick cried out, stopping in his tracks, trying to help her back to her feet.
With Mags still clinging to Finnick's back, he grabbed Phoenix's hand tightly, steadying her as she limped painfully down the hill. Every step sent a fresh wave of pain through her body, each more excruciating than the last. Tears welled up in her eyes and spilled over, but she kept moving, knowing there was no other option.
Phoenix feels Finnick's hand slip out of her grip, his screams following close after. That's when the burning sensation took over Phoenix's body once again. Phoenix desperately tries to ignore the pain as she helps Mags back onto Finnick's back. "Go!" Phoenix shouted, before grabbing hold of Finnick's arm.
From a distance, she caught sight of Peeta collapsing to the ground, taking Katniss with him. "Come on!" Phoenix exclaimed, limping toward them, trying to push past the pain.
When she reached Peeta, she looked at the welts covering his face, thinking quickly of how she could even help him. Her stomach sank, feeling helpless in this situation. She knew she and Katniss wouldn't be able to carry him very far in their state.
