I opened my eyes to confused and insistent commotion. I shot straight up at the sight of Chris, Nina and Jay all struggling to stand on the floor. Shock registered for a long moment until I remembered what had just happened. I stared down at my palm. A fading pink line was still visible on my palm. I stared at it for a moment before jumping out of bed and rushing to help.
Nick watched me for a while, knowing I'd had something to do with this, but said nothing. Between us we got Nina into bed, laid her flat until she regained her strength, got Jay into the chair by the window and hardest of us (due to the werewolf's sheer size) got Christ onto the couch.
"What happened to you?" I asked Chris instantly.
"We got caught just as we were leaving the mansion," he told me, fear in his eyes. "They didn't do anything to us... just knocked us all out. We woke up in some store house God knows where. We got water and a little food, Ray had to feed of Nina."
"But you weren't... hurt right?"
"No, we weren't hurt," he sighed. "Where are the others?"
"I-" I took a deep breath, then let it out. "They're next."
"What does that mean?" Nick was at my side in an instant.
This was going to be awkward.
"I made a deal with Ryder to have them released," I said, trying desperately to think of a way to sugar-coat this whole thing.
"What kind of deal." Nick demanded.
"The blood oath kind."
"Don't play coy Victoria," he caught my eye and held it. "What do you have to do?"
"That's another thing," I said quickly. "He knows this body, I have to change-"
"What do you have to do?" I asked stonily.
I took a deep breath. "Sleep with him."
"I see," Nick stood up. "You know that this is a trap right? As soon as you show up, the devil and his army will drag you back to hell."
"No!" I stood up too. "I was careful Nick, it's only one night, nothing else." I didn't mention the consequence that Ryder was hoping for. I knew he was wrong.
"Victoria?" Nina rose weakly from the bed. "I have to tell you... I'm going back upstairs. This is not my war, I'm sorry."
"It's alright," I told her, and I meant it. "I understand."
"So you're just gonna poof back up there?" Jay asked her calmly.
"Yes," she didn't look at him.
"I see," he took a deep breath and pushed himself up. "I'm sorry Vi, but I'm off too. Back to my family."
"Will you be safe there?" I asked.
"Yeah," he smiled. "It's protected land."
"Okay," I nodded.
"I'll fly you there," Nina struggled to her feet to. "Before I go vertical through the veil."
"Thank you," he nodded.
"Good luck," I told them both.
"You too," Nina ran up and hugged me.
It itched, hugging an angel. I didn't like the sensation, but Nina was my friend. I hugged her back before she stepped away. Jay came over and shook my, Nick and Chris's hand. Nina hugged Chris, then hugged me again.
It was still the middle of the night, so Nina and Jay took off, literally. I had no idea how long she'd be able to carry him like that, but she seemed fine as they disappeared on the horizon.
"There has to be another way to get Matt, Justin and Ray back," Chris said as soon as we were back in the room. "Without screwing the devil's son."
"I can't go back on the oath," I told him. "It's impossible."
"No saying your fingers were crossed?" he asked, stretching out on the bed. He was acting calm, but I saw the tension.
"No," Nick sighed, it was a miserable sound. "There is no way to go back on a blood oath."
"Right then," Chris stared at the ceiling. "Thank you Victoria, for saving us."
"No problem," I nodded. "Well... I for one am going back to sleep."
"Works for me," Nick smiled at me tiredly.
"Then I'm back on the couch," Chris pouted all the way to it. "I better hear no suspicious sounds from that bed."
"Don't worry, we'll be very quiet," Nick grinned, then turned the lights out.
Chris burst out laughing and I punched Nick's shoulder hard enough to make him 'oomph'. That just made Chris laugh harder and I couldn't help but grin as Nick and I snuggled back into bed. I may have to go against everything I'd promised myself soon... but I was doing it to save my friends, and that was good enough for me. There was no way that we were blood compatible, so I would also be free soon. Ryder had always been an arrogant bastard, and now I was going to use that to my advantage. I was going to be free.
