~Kaylee
The bell rang signifying the end of class, the end of the day and the end of the week. I sighed in relief as I picked up my bag to leave the classroom.
Few more days and a few more papers, we’ll be on Christmas break. I could finally rest, not just from school, but the whole drama that’s been going on.
As usual, there’s been different rumors going on. The whole scene that happened in the hallway was the fuel that was added to the fire. They heard every single thing we said, I mean we weren’t exactly whispering.
But that’s all, they don’t know everything. They could only try to piece what was going on leading to the wildest and dumbest rumors circulating around.
It didn’t help matters that Christian and I acted like strangers towards ourselves, well I would say I was the one who acted like he didn’t exist. Most of the time, I would catch him staring at me during classes and sometimes he would come up to me to talk to me then suddenly apologize and turn away.
None of that mattered because half of the time, Melissa was glued to his side. The smirks she sent to me and the proud look on her face were the most annoying part of everything, regardless, she won.
Or at least I let her. Frankly, I didn’t think I had any more will to fight anymore. For anything or anyone. If he was happy with her, then so be it. Like I said, I could finally take a break from all of that.
I wasn’t doing so bad myself. I was mostly with Becca, her evil incarnate of a twin sister Bella, stayed out of my way and continued acting like I didn’t exist, which wasn’t really a new thing. When I wasn’t at school, I spent my time studying and journaling a lot. Journaling had a way of channeling all your deep thought and emotions into a piece of paper in form of words. It’s all the therapy you need.
Once or Twice, I stopped by at the hospital so I could check on Izzy. I never really went in to visit her, just made sure she was ok by asking her nurse and sent a few things to her. I was trying to avoid getting caught again by Ryan, whom I found out was actually her brother.
On cue like he knew I was just thinking about him, Ryan stepped in front of me blocking my way. It was lunch and I was on my way to the library. He had been sending occasional glances my way throughout the week but this was the first time he had confronted me.
“Hi?” I stared up at him confused.
“What were you doing there that day?” he asked getting straight to the point his eyes glaring into mine like he was daring me to lie.
What happened to hello? How are you doing? What a hectic week right?
Nope, instead I get a glare and an interrogation. He’s a grumpy douche Bache but I used to be one too so who does he think he’s trying to intimidate.
“What do you mean by there?” I asked raising an eyebrow.
“Don’t play dumb with me!” he hissed, annoyance clearly written on his face.
Too bad because, I wasn’t so much in a good mood right now either.
“I don’t have time for this.” I pushed past him.
“Kaylee.” he said from behind. “You’re the Kaylee she was talking about aren’t you?”
I stopped in my tracks but I didn’t turn to look at him.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I said and then continued walking leaving him behind.
Ignore him. It’s nothing. Even if he knows it’s me, it’s not the end of the world. It’s not like everyone in the school is going to find out. The worst he could do was tell Christian. Even at that, nothing is going to change because I don’t care anymore.
Getting into my car, I drove to the hospital.
….
“What the hell?!” I exclaimed staring down at the figures on the paper I was currently holding in my hand.
I looked up to stare at the lady sitting down in front of me.
“Yes? Is there a problem.” she asked batting her eyelashes up at me innocently.
“A problem? Yes there is a problem? There seems to be a typographical error. There isn’t meant to be that much zeros.” I said pushing the paper towards her.
“Look.” she said pushing it back. “She isn’t covered by insurance. And what you’re asking for is one of the best hospitals and treatments. It’s not cheap, you should have thought about it thoroughly.”
“But…she needs it to get better.” I frowned wondering where the heck I was going to get that money from. “She’s just a child for crying out loud.”
“And I’m just doing my job.” the lady replied now focusing her attention back on her phone.
After about five minutes of glaring, I realized I couldn’t shoot lasers out of my eyes or use mind control to manipulate her, so I stormed out and drove home.
I wasn’t in a much better mood when I got home. I was practically fuming as I parked and made my way into the house.
“How was school?” Seeing the anger all over my face, Rick paused a little. “What happened?”
“Life happened.” I muttered heading upstairs to my room.
I was annoyed. Annoyed with Christian, Melissa, school, Ryan, Izzy’s treatment….everything! It’s like they all decided to join one force to frustrate the hell out of me.
I barged into my room and fell on my bed heads down trying to relax a little bit. The next moment, I heard a knock on the door.
“Come in.” I mumbled already knowing it was Rick.
“Hey…are you ok?” I heard him ask.
I rolled over to my back and sat up.
“Not really” I placed my hands on my head.
“Want to talk about it?” he asked, a slightly nervous but hopeful look on his face.
I could tell he didn’t want to push his boundaries too much, we were doing so well and I know he didn’t want to make any mistake to ruin that.
“Yeah, I guess.” I said giving him a small smile as he came to seat next to me.
I ended up telling him everything. Everything from Christian to Izzy. How everything just kept on piling up and getting me worked up. It felt good. Other than journaling, it did feel good to talk with him.
“You could have told ne though. I’ll be more than happy to pay the bills.” he said as I finished.
“It’s a lot, you don’t even know her.” I sighed.
“I don’t need to know her to tell she’s an amazing person. Amazing enough to make you care and be so worried about her.”
“Are you sure you’re really ok with it?”
I heaved a huge sigh of relief, one problem down. “Thank you that means a lot to me.”
“Also, about you and Christian…”
“Don’t worry, I’m fine.” I replied, I wasn’t sure whether that was even the truth or not.
“I guess I should cancel the thanksgiving dinner plans Ms. Anderson invited us to.”
“She invited us for a thanksgiving dinner?” I frowned.
“Yeah, a few weeks ago. I forgot to tell you but now, I don’t want to make it awkward for you and I don’t want to leave you alone for thanksgiving night.” he said.
“Don’t worry about it. She invited us and it would seem rude if we didn’t show up when you’ve already accepted it.”
“I can make up an excuse?” He suggested but I shook my head.
“I can deal with it. It’s just a breakup, it’s not the end of the world.”
It’s just one dinner…
