Bro Code #1: Always have each other's backs. No matter what.
Kyle and I made that pact years ago on a playground. Eight words and one handshake created a friendship of thirteen years, commencing many fond memories to reminisce.
We entered our senior year in high school last fall. Stepping onto campus in our last year hit differently, and I remember getting a weird feeling that this year will be the most memorable. Kyle was beside me like always, his E-boy aesthetic and charming looks attracting everyone.
The first few months were normal, nothing interesting except the usual gossip of the newest couples, breakups, hookups, and cheerleaders getting pregnant. It was around December when things started to get strange.
Kyle confided in me that he was failing, from B's to F's. It was English, he said. He was failing English. I knew Kyle wasn't the best in English nor did he enjoy it, but I also knew Kyle was smarter than to settle for an F in the class.
He values his pride more than anything.
He was doing fine, he said. But the teacher was a stingy boomer who didn't like him. That's why he's failing. Not because of him, but because of the teacher.
Or at least that's what he sees.
Kyle's very sensitive and easily angered.
Anything triggers him.
From then on, his poor performance in English affected other subjects. His demeanor also changed, becoming a cold and distant boy who now took an interest on guns.
I knew he didn't like guns because that's how his Momma was killed, but one day, he showcased his secret collection of handguns and rifles. He made jokes about shooting up the school and shooting his English teacher. I took it as a joke since his sense of humor is pretty dark. He says outrageous things when he's overwhelmed or emotional.
But then he said something that made me question his intentions.
"Remember our bro code?" He asked. "Whatever happens, you'll back me up, right? No matter what?"
I got a bad feeling.
I didn't want to say anything in case it was a poor joke taken too far. He sometimes did that. I also didn't want him in trouble for nothing. I rationalized, saying I shouldn't start rumors based on assumptions.
Kyle wouldn't do that, I assured. He's not that person.
That night, I got a notification on social media, and found Kyle's post.
I then called the police without hesitation, warning them about tomorrow.
The next day, the cops were at school. I saw Kyle handcuffed.
Apparently, he did have a gun.
I passed by him, eyes making contact.
You broke the code, he said, mad. Burn in hell.
The post last night read:
B's to F's? Damn.
Screw school. They'll get what they deserve.
LOL, tomorrow at nine, I'ma shoot them all.
Y'all better not snitch :)
Bro Code #1: Always have each other's backs.
I'm sorry Kyle.
But I'm not bros with a school shooter.
