"So, I'm thinking about having Les go to preschool, what do you think?" Mrs. Jacobs asked Davey the next morning at breakfast.
"I don't think that would be necessary, I mean, I never went to preschool, and neither did Sarah, plus, there's only like four months until he goes to kindergarten, why?" Davey responded.
"Oh, I was just thinking I could get him used to a school environment early, because you were so nervous on your first day of kindergarten," Mrs. Jacobs shrugged.
"Yeah, but, Les isn't like me, I'm an introvert, he's an extrovert, he has a lot easier of a time socializing than I do, he'll be fine," Davey assured her.
"Oh... I guess that's true," Mrs. Jacobs nodded, "Now, it looks like it's about time to get YOU to school," she added, looking at the clock.
Later, when Davey got to school, he noticed several of the newsies walking around with armfuls of papers, likely the school newspapers. Suddenly someone shouted "BOO!" from next to him, he wasn't startled, he simply turned around and saw that it was actually two people who had tried to scare him.
"Hey Crutchie, and... Maine, right?" Davey asked them. The blonde girl next to Crutchie smiled.
"Yup, that's me, and YOU'RE David," she giggled.
"Actually, um... my friends call me Davey, I don't know if we ARE friends... but.. Umm..." Davey started awkwardly.
"Sure we're friends, I mean, I'd say we are," Maine giggled.
"Oh... Okay, cool," Davey nodded.
"I just have a few questions for you," Maine got a notepad out of her pocket, "First, HOW did I not scare you? That gets almost everyone!"
"I don't know, I guess I don't get scared unless I know there's a real threat," Davey shrugged.
"Okay, next, yesterday you said you have good hand-eye coordination, explain?" Maine asked.
"Well... um... I... I juggle, it's a skill I learned in third grade, for a talent show, but I... I got stage fright and never actually ended up performing," Davey explained.
"Oh, juggling, fun" Maine nodded.
"Yeah, I sometimes still do it when I'm bored," Davey shrugged.
"You said you learned in third grade? That's impressive, all I was doing in third grade was learning to do a no-handed cartwheel, I learned a one-handed cartwheel in second grade and a regular cartwheel in kindergarten," Maine replied enthusiastically.
"Did you learn anything cool like that in first grade?" Davey asked.
"Pffft, no, I skipped first grade, my mom said it was 'the most pointless grade in school', so I just went straight to second," Maine answered.
"Really? How old are you?" Davey asked her.
"Ten, I'll be eleven this July," Maine answered coolly.
"Woah, I thought you looked young," Davey replied in surprise.
"Hey, Crutchie, Davey, Maine, what's going on?" someone called from down the hall, Davey looked in the direction the voice came from and saw Jack approaching them.
"Umm... they were just asking me some questions," Davey answered.
"DAVEY CAN JUGGLE!!!" Maine shouted. Jack looked at Davey.
"For real?" Jack asked in surprise.
"Well... yeah... kind of..." Davey felt his face grow increasingly red.
