~Kaylee

Dinner thankfully went in a flash, it mostly consisted of me poking my food out of boredom, my uncle and Karen engaging in a conversation of the good old days they had when they were kids and Christian thankfully on his phone.

Just a few more steps and I can retreat to my safe haven, FYI, my room.

“Thanks for having us over for dinner.” Karen said as they stepped outside.

“Thanks for coming over, it was nice having a trip down memory lane” Rick replied. “I think it is great Kaylee and Christian attend the same school.”

“I was so worried he won’t make any real friends considering he’s always on his phone.” She said smacking Christian’s head to get his attention away from, you guessed it, his phone.

I stifled a grin. I liked her already.

“How’s your car by the way?” Kristen asked using this opportunity to speak up.

“None of your-“

“Broken down, wanted to get her a new car but she’s just so considerate and didn’t want me spending so much.” Rick rudely interrupted me and I turned to glare at him.

Considerate my foot!

“I’d love to drop her off at school but work these days is really demanding.” Rick continued like the traitor he was.

Sure, spread my business to the world. I don’t mind at all.

“We’re practically neighbours, I’m sure Christian wouldn’t mind dropping her off.” Karen suggested sweetly.

“I don’t mind at all.” Christian replied smirking and wriggling his eyebrows at me.

How I’d love to wipe that smirk off his face.

I did notice my uncle and his mom watched us with a certain interest

Those sneaky little....

This was all a setup!

And Christian was using it to his advantage.

Somehow, we ended up exchanging numbers from the gentle nudge, ahem SHOVE, from both adults.

And I made a mental note to block him immediately. For now, I just wanted to end the night. I didn’t even argue when Christian said he would be here in the morning to pick me up.

“Everything sounds great” I plastered a fake smile on my face.

“It does?” Christian asked surprised by my reaction.

Even Rick looked a bit taken back.

“Yup! I look forward to it tomorrow” I slowly retreated into the house. “I’ll be in my room, so goodnight.”

I’d love to see the look on his face when he comes to pick me up and find out I’m not there.

The next day, I woke up quite early and got ready faster than I usually do. It was quite easy, I just skipped the part where I stared at my reflection and wonder why life was shit.

Rick hadn’t even come down when I stepped out of the house and started walking down the street to school.

If I could avoid any more encounters with him, I didn’t mind this little sacrifice.

Why exactly do you want to avoid him so bad?  a small voice asked in my head.

He was annoying and frustrating! Maybe that wasn’t the reason but that’s what I told myself.

Besides, I was an independent girl and I didn’t need help from anyone. Not my uncle and certainly not Christian. No-one at all.

Five minutes later, I sat...sorry cross that out, I fell on the seat near the bus stop. I was independent of people not furniture!

There used to be a time I could take long strolls outside without getting tired every passing minute. I let out a small sigh.

“You know, you really do need to get some exercise” I heard a familiar annoying voice say.

Slowly, I looked up to see Christian in front of me with his car.

“What are you doing here?” I asked through clenched teeth.

I did all that to avoid him, yet here he was.

“Maybe you fooled your uncle but not me, you agreeing to something means you’re up to something else” He said.

“I’m touched, you know me so well” I said glaring daggers at him which he easily ignored.

“I know right, it’s been two days now and it feels like we’ve known each other for so long.” He said and I rolled my eyes.

“We made a deal that if I told you my name, you would leave me alone” I reminded him.

“Except you never told me your name cause I heard it from your uncle” He smirked.

Ok, he was good.

“Forget it, you can go now. I don’t need your help. I’m fine taking the bus.” I folded my arms.

“What’s so wrong in letting me help you?” He asked, I could hear the hurt laced in his voice but I didn’t care.

“Maybe you haven’t noticed but I’m not so popular at school and you’re like the school’s golden boy already. I don’t think you should be hanging out with me” I said looking away.

“Golden boy? You really think I care about that? About being popular?” He scoffed.

Yeah right, and Unicorns are real.

“Whatever” I said turning back to look at him. “If you don’t then I do. If they see me with you, I’ll become their new target. I’m really not looking forward to the attention.”

“OK how about this? I’ll drop you at the street before the school so you can walk there and no one will see us” He offered.

He could just leave and ignore me but for some reason he’s still here.

Why?

“What’s in it for you?” I asked him suspiciously.

“Just consider it a favour from me and then you can owe me one” He said.

I stared at him for a whole minute before sighing.

I really didn’t have much of a choice.

He wasn’t one to give up easily.

“This doesn’t make us friends” I clarified as I got into the car.

“It’s a start” I heard him say as we drove off but I chose to ignore it.
