“And there’s really nothing you can do?” I asked looking at my mom’s car before turning to look at the mechanic.

He gave me a small smile.

“I think it’s best you let it go, you’re likely to get into an accident if you keep on using it.”

I was reluctant to let it go because it felt like letting go of my mom but I guess I still had her favourite key chain to hold on to.

It was late in the evening when I finally got home.

“So, how’s the car?” Rick asked as I walked in.

“Done for” I didn’t pause as I went up the stairs.

“I can get you a new one. You won’t be able to go to school” He offered.

“I don’t need a new car or anything. I have some money saved up to take a bus or taxi.” I said not bothering to look back.

“Taxi? Everyday? Let me just-“

“I don’t need anything. Especially not from you.” I said coldly interrupting before I climbed up the remaining stairs to my room.

Did I feel bad about the way I treated my uncle sometimes?

Yeah, a little.

But he doesn’t seem to realise no matter how much money he tries to shove to me, it’s not going to bring my mom back.

Rick had already gone up to his room when I went downstairs to the kitchen. Taking the bread out of the pantry, I toasted a few slices before putting jam on top.

Nothing like breakfast for dinner.

I was halfway done with my toast when I heard the doorbell ring.

I frowned.

I didn’t know we were expecting someone. I made my way to the door when the ringing continued.

The door swung open and I saw Christian.

My eyes narrowed and the toast almost fell from my hand as I looked at him.

“You” was the only word that came to my mouth.

“Yup, me” He replied a smile on his face.

I was about to slam, the door in his face when I noticed a woman besides him.

From the resemblance, I gathered she was Christian’s mom.

It wasn’t clear when you look at them at first, probably the fact that she was white and he....well he was mixed.

But he had the same grey eyes as she did and he had obviously gotten his charming smile from her.

Other than that, they had nothing in common whereas she had hazelnut brown hair and his was curly and dark, his lean but built and tall size towered over her petite size.

Well you get the point.

“You guys know each other?” She asked surprised as she looked at both of us.

“Yup, we met at school just today and it feels like we’re best friends already” Christian said and I shot him a glare.

“That’s wonderful” his mom exclaimed before I could even deny it. “I’m his mom, you can call me Karen. Nice to meet you dear”

“Nice to meet you too, um come in.” I said stepping out of the way.

“Thank you, Rick invited us over for dinner.” She said as they came in and shut the door.
