Remus Lupin did not like Gracelyn Cohen. He couldn't. He was simply lonely. Yes, that was it. At least, that was what he chalked it up to.

She was not a mystery. She was easy to figure out. She had no secrets. She didn't thrive off attention from strangers or run off into the night each month like Remus. She didn't have an embarrassing birthmark or any negative rumors surrounding her. Gracelyn was normal and Remus hated that because he wasn't.

In a world of wizards and witches, Remus wanted normal as normal could be, and that was Gracelyn. She was normal and by being around her, he felt like a normal teenager. He was sure that was it. He did not like her.

Upon entering the Great Hall, Remus was jealous to see his old mates laughing at the dinner table. Because he swore he didn't like Gracelyn, he didn't understand why he grabbed Gracelyn the moment he saw her enter the Great Hall and kissed her there and then with everyone watching.

It was ill-timed, but what shocked him was that she had been the first coping mechanism he resorted to.

The Marauders had stopped laughing. Remus didn't have to turn around to know. He could hear it as he kissed Gracelyn. She didn't refuse him but reciprocated it. They withdrew from the kiss. Her eyebrows were furrowed in as if she cared about him. He didn't understand it.

"Is something wrong, Remus?" she murmured.

He stared into her eyes as if she was a difficult problem to solve. "No, sorry. I just..."

"It's all right," she reassured. "We should go to our tables now unless you'd like to join mine tonight?"

Remus risked the chance of glancing over his shoulder to his old mates. They were already looking at him and Gracelyn. Remus turned back to her.

"I'd like that."

And so, a Gryffindor sat at the table of Ravenclaws and a silent Slytherin that night.
