Harry's first experience was awful. His worst fear, was fear itself; his Boggart changed into a Dementor. It would happiness out of him and caused him to hear his mother's dying moments.
Another famous Boggart encounter in the Harry Potter series is that of Molly Weasley. While cleaning up 12 Grimmauld Place, headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix, she came across a Boggart in an old cabinet. It showed her the death of her loved ones...
For Hermione, it turned into Professor McGonagall telling her she had a failing grade. For Ron, a giant spider. For Neville it became Severus Snape, for Seamus a Banshee, and so on, and so on.

So how do we get rid of such a horrible, depressing creature? Simple: with laughter. Riddikulus forces the Boggart to change into something funny. A legless spider. Snape in grandma's clothes. This induces laughter - the one thing a Boggart cannot stand.
