It all started with a kiss, that spiraled into a disaster. This was considered my rude awakening to the world. It was considered the hardest three years of my life, I mean who can blame me? I was young and stubborn. I wanted to prove people wrong, I thought I could make a difference. I would make a difference. I'm sure you would like to know what I'm talking about. Here goes nothing... or maybe everything.
My name is Lucy Higgins and this story begins on New Years Eve, 1988. My closest friends and I decided to go to a club to celebrate the new year of 1989. We were dancing, drinking and having a good time.
While I was out on the dance floor I ran into this handsome, tall African American guy. His name was Deshawn. I was drawn to him instantly. He had this mysterious vibe, which made me want to know him better. After a while of chatting he ended up telling me he was here with a date, but that he hadn't seen her in a while. So, we decided to dance together.
After some time we realized it was 11:59. The New Year's Eve ball was about to drop and his date was nowhere near him. As soon as the clock ticked midnight he kissed me. This wasn't any ordinary kiss, this was one that caused butterflies in my stomach and tingles up my spine. This kiss made me feel like I had finally found the one. The one I was willing to give up everything for and soon I did.
Deshawn and I ended up starting the new year together, and kept on seeing each other. I learned he had some bad habits, like drinking and smoking. However, I was willing to look past them.
I finally decided to tell my parents about Deshawn. They were not happy about me dating an African American. I didn't care what they thought, I was in love. They were never going to understand because they grew up with racism and segregation. I planned on changing their minds. Honestly, I planned on changing the whole world's mind about biracial relationships. They decided they didn't want a daughter dating an African American, and since I wasn't going to end my relationship they disowned me. It was the hardest moment of my life, to lose the ones that were closest to me, but I knew this man was the one.
I knew my parents wouldn't understand, so I decided to move to Texas. I thought Texas was a very open state, they accept anyone and everyone. After I talked to Deshawn about it, he thought it was a great idea to move there.
We packed up a moving van and he drove it to Indiana while I followed behind in my Nova. The only problem was that Nova belonged to my parents. We didn't think it was a good idea to have it, considering it belonged to them, and none of us were on the best terms.
We decided to leave it at a truck stop so my parents could pick it up. I found a payphone, called them and told them their orange Nova was at a truck stop in Indiana. They met me there and that's where I told them Deshawn and I were moving to Texas. After all the goodbyes, I jumped into the passenger's side of the moving truck. From this moment, Deshawn and I were ready to start a new life together. On our way to Texas, Deshawn asked me if I wanted to marry him.
I said "Yes, of course I do."
He said "Once we reach Texas how about we get married?"
"That would be a wonderful idea! A perfect start to our new life."
After going through Indiana, Illinois, Missouri and Oklahoma, we finally made it to Texas. It was the first day of November, at ten in the morning, when we finally reached Texas. We decided to head to the nearest courthouse. As soon as we reached it we found out where to go for our matrimonial papers. Then we found a random person to be our witness, and we became married by the Justice of the Peace. I was so happy, I couldn't stop smiling. Now, I was going to change the world.
We found a cheap one bedroom apartment and rented it. We still had some money left over, so we bought a red Dodge Spirit. A few days later, I started a job at the elementary school. I was so excited, I finally felt accepted and free from judgement.
